Petzl

Fifty years of French vertical-safety engineering, and the spine of most rope access kits — including ours.

If you work at height, you are almost certainly already on Petzl — and for good reason. Nobody else covers the whole vertical system, from the harness to the descender to the light on your helmet, with this level of engineering. Fifty years of it, still family-run, still made in the French Alps where it started. It is the backbone of our own rope access kit, and it is the brand we recommend first.

Fernand Petzl was a caver first. He spent the 1930s underground in the Dent de Crolles system in the French Alps, and started making his own gear because what existed wasn’t good enough to get him back out. That’s the whole company in one sentence: the equipment came from the problem, not the market.

The business was formally born in 1975, in Crolles at the foot of that same mountain. It is still family-run — Fernand’s son Paul has been at the head of it — and still headquartered and largely manufactured in the Isère, across sites at Crolles, Eybens and Rotherens.

What they’re actually good at

The system, not the product. Anyone can make a good descender. Petzl’s advantage is that the descender, the ascender, the backup device, the lanyard, the harness attachment point and the helmet were all designed knowing about each other. When you build a rope access kit entirely out of Petzl, the pieces fit — the CROLL sits where the ASTRO’s ventral attachment puts it, the ASAP tracks the way the ASAP’SORBER expects. That coherence is worth real money on a job where fumbling costs you time on rope.

Genuine category definition. The I’D is what the rope access industry means when it says “descender.” The ASAP is what it means by “mobile fall arrester.” The CROLL/ASCENSION pairing is simply how most of the world climbs a rope. You can disagree with those defaults, but you’re arguing against the reference point, and that’s a position very few manufacturers ever earn.

They teach. Petzl publishes technical documentation, running-the-system guidance and training material at a depth almost nobody in PPE matches. For a shop like ours, that matters twice over: it makes the gear safer in the hands of someone learning, and it means the answer to a hard question usually exists in writing.

Breadth that actually connects. Rope access, fall protection, rescue, confined space, arborist, and recreational climbing — plus the headlamps, which is not a side business. It’s the same competence pointed at different problems.

Built to be trusted — and open about it

Petzl publishes its safety alerts in the open. Every inspection notice, every recall, every “stop using this batch” is posted publicly on their site rather than quietly handled through dealers. For a company whose products hold people off the ground, that transparency is worth as much as the engineering.

They act on it, too. When the ASTRO ventral D-ring needed replacing in 2026, Petzl shipped free replacement kits. When a run of GRILLON lanyards left the factory with the rope mounted incorrectly, they issued a stop-sale before anyone was hurt. That is what a serious PPE manufacturer looks like.

Practical advice, and it applies to every brand you own: bookmark Petzl’s safety alerts page and check it when you inspect your kit. Petzl makes that easy. Many manufacturers don’t.

What the ten-year rule actually means

Petzl gives textile products a ten-year maximum life from date of manufacture. That’s the industry norm rather than a Petzl invention — Mammut’s guidance is if anything shorter — and it exists because webbing and rope degrade in ways you can’t always see.

Worth knowing: Petzl used to apply the same limit to metal, then in 2008 dropped it and moved metal products to an indefinite lifespan, retroactively, including gear already sold. They changed the rule when the evidence supported changing it. Retire your textiles on schedule; your carabiners are fine.

Who Petzl is for

If you work at height professionally — rope access, rescue, arborist, tower, façade, confined space — Petzl should be the backbone of your kit. The system coherence alone justifies it: every piece was designed knowing about every other piece, and on rope that saves you time you can actually feel.

If you climb recreationally, you are buying into the same engineering that professionals trust with their lives. The GriGri is the most recognised belay device in the world for a reason.
