Will these crampons fit my boots?
Short answer
Crampons attach to welts, not to letters. A C1 strap-on fits most stiff-soled boots, a C2 hybrid needs a heel welt, and a C3 automatic needs a toe welt as well. The B0–B3 and C1–C3 lettering is a trade convention, not a standard — check the boot for welts.
The question usually arrives with a deadline attached: crampons on the table, boots by the door, a trip on Saturday, and somebody has said the word “B2” without making clear whether that was a fact about the boots or an opinion about them.
The letters are useful shorthand and they’re also why people get this wrong. They describe a relationship between two objects, but they’re printed — when they’re printed at all — on only one of them.
What do the B and C numbers mean?
B numbers grade the boot, C numbers grade the crampon binding, and the rule is that a crampon needs a boot of the same number or higher. Scarpa sets out the four boot grades: B0 boots are “very flexible” and designed for walking below the snowline, B1 boots are “stiffer 4 season boots” for long winter walks and scrambling, B2 boots are stiffer again and aimed at summer alpinism or Scottish winter, and B3 boots are for “mixed and ice climbing and year round Alpinism.”
On the crampon side, Scarpa describes C1 as a strap system, C2 as “a plastic heel lever and a flexible toe cradle,” and C3 as a “step in” system combining a plastic heel lever with a metal toe bar. Ellis Brigham states the pairing rule directly: C1 works with B1, B2 and B3; C2 with B2 and B3; C3 with B3 only.
Is the B/C lettering an actual standard?
No — it’s a trade convention, and the standard that does exist covers only the crampon. BS EN 893:2019 “specifies safety requirements and test methods for crampons intended to prevent the user from slipping when used in mountaineering on snow and ice including climbing mixed terrain.” It grades no boots. Salewa notes that crampons are PPE and “must comply with the stringent EN 893 standard, which verifies the resistance of the points, the baskets and the linking bar” — points, baskets, bar, and nothing about the footwear.
UK retailer Trekitt puts the gap bluntly: “Neither crampons nor boots have a common rating system, either for stiffness or intended use, particularly across brands.” You can watch that play out on manufacturer pages. La Sportiva’s Nepal Evo GTX listing carries no B number anywhere; the only crampon reference in its specs is a midsole built with a “heel crampon compatible TPU insert.” Grivel’s crampon finder doesn’t ask for a C number either — it asks what your boot has, offering “No crampon-compatible edge (no welt),” “Semi-automatic (Rear welt boots)” and “Automatic (front and rear welt).” Winter kit is full of that gap between a written standard and a shorthand — see climbing helmet standards.
What on the boot actually decides the fit?
The welts — the molded ledges at the toe and heel that a binding hooks onto. Salewa’s version of the rule is the clearest published statement of it: for a step-in crampon “the right welt is required on the front and back of the boot,” for a semi-automatic “the welt is only required on the heel,” and a universal crampon has “no need for the welt, can be worn with any boot.”
That’s why the same crampon frame can belong to two different C categories. Petzl sells the Leopard in two binding systems “to adapt to different footwear, with or without toe and heel welts,” and the Dart with a toe-and-heel-welt binding as standard plus a FIL FLEX and BACK FLEX option for boots without welts. Black Diamond splits the Sabretooth the same way: the Pro version “accommodates boots with a toe welt,” the Clip version “features flexible toe strap for boots without a toe welt.” The C number describes the binding fitted, not the crampon in the box.
Does sole stiffness still matter once the welts fit?
Yes — a flexing sole works a rigid crampon loose no matter how well the bindings sit. The BMC describes B0 walking boots as “not rigid enough in their midsole for crampons,” B2 boots as having “a three quarter or full shank midsole,” and B3 boots as rigid in both midsole and upper. Climbing Technology makes the same point in product terms: the Nuptse Evo Classic is described as fitting “any stiffened winter boot,” while a separate Classic Flex variant exists for use “with non-rigid boots.”
Petzl’s technical notice gives the test rather than the theory: “Verify that the boots are securely held and cannot shift in the crampons, neither upwards, nor side-to-side, nor lengthwise.” The same document warns that “the crampons may not be compatible with certain boots” — a manufacturer telling you the lettering won’t settle every case.
Which crampon binding fits which boot?
Match the binding to the welts first, then check the sole is stiff enough to hold it.

Manufacturer names don’t map cleanly onto the C numbers. Black Diamond’s “Clip” and “Pro” labels refer to the toe end, not the heel, so a Sabretooth Clip is the hybrid and a Sabretooth Pro is the automatic.
Do sources agree on what a C2 needs?
No, and the disagreement is about which end of the boot carries the hard part. Scarpa describes a C2 as “a plastic heel lever and a flexible toe cradle,” Salewa says the welt for a semi-automatic “is only required on the heel,” and Ellis Brigham says C2 crampons “have a heel clip to attach to the heel welt of your B2 or B3 boots.” UK brand Alpkit describes it the other way round: “A C2 crampon uses a step-in bail at the toe and a strap at the heel, which requires the rigid welt found on B2 and B3 boots.”
The top of the range is contested too. The BMC writes that a B3 boot “will also take C2 and C1”; Alpkit’s compatibility table lists B3 as “C2 only.” We’re not going to adjudicate that. The letters carry different meanings at different sources, which is what you’d expect of a convention — and it’s why the welt check beats the label check.
Horizontal or vertical front points — which do you need?
Front-point geometry is a question about what you’re climbing, not about whether the crampon fits. Black Diamond describes the Sabretooth as having “versatile horizontal frontpoints and technical secondary points,” which is the general mountaineering shape. Petzl’s Dart is modular, with short or long mono-point configurations for ice climbing and dry tooling, an asymmetrical dual-point for pure ice, and a dual-point for snow couloirs. Any geometry can sit on any of the three binding types, so the boot doesn’t decide the point shape.
Do you need anti-balling plates?
On snow, yes — and most current models include them. Grivel’s G12 LT lists “ANTIBOTT FRONT AND REAR.” Climbing Technology fits the Nuptse Evo with exchangeable ANTIBOTTS “equipped with bellows to prevent snow build-up beneath the crampon,” and Black Diamond includes “front and rear dual-density ABS” on the Sabretooth. Wet snow packing into the frame lifts you off your points, so plates earn their place below the freezing level.
How do you know the crampon is adjusted correctly?
A correctly sized crampon holds onto the boot before you fasten a single strap. Alpine Ascents states that after adjustment the crampon “should hold to your boot without the strap,” Lift the boot by the crampon to check. Straps are the backup, not the attachment.
Sizing is done on the linking bar. Climbing Technology’s Nuptse Evo covers EU 36–47 with a macro-setting that switches the frame between a 36–43 and a 42–47 range, and Petzl gives the Dart a 34–49 range depending on the linking bar chosen. Edelrid adds the caveat that matters when you’re buying online, noting on the Beast Lite Auto page that “the sole length of shoe models from different manufacturers can sometimes vary greatly.” Fit them to the boots before the trip.
Steel or aluminum?
Steel wherever there’s rock or ice; aluminum only for snow. Petzl’s technical notice is unambiguous: “Aluminum points can break or wear quickly on rock and provide less traction on ice than steel points.” Weight is the reason anyone accepts that limitation. Petzl lists the aluminum Leopard at 330 g in its LEVERLOCK FIL version and 385 g in FLEXLOCK, and the Irvis Hybrid — aluminum heel section, steel front — at 540 g or 570 g depending on binding. Steel models run heavier: Grivel gives the G12 LT as 861 g per pair, Petzl the Dart as 815 g in mono-point form, Black Diamond the Sabretooth as 910 g (Clip) and 890 g (Pro), and Climbing Technology the Nuptse Evo between 950 g and 1,050 g across its four versions.
Not every page gives you a number: Edelrid’s Beast Lite Auto listing states EN 893 conformity and the materials but publishes no weight figure at all. Where the route involves ice or rock, steel is the material the manufacturers point you toward.
