What is a via ferrata set and why does it expire?

Short answer

A via ferrata set is a shock-absorbing lanyard certified to EN 958: two arms, two type K carabiners, and one energy absorber sized for users between 40 and 120 kg. It expires twice over — instantly after any fall that loads the absorber, and again when the maker's textile service life runs out.

Most gear expires quietly. A via ferrata set expires twice — once in about a second and a half, and once on a calendar. Both limits are printed on it, next to a weight range most owners never read.

What is a via ferrata set?

A via ferrata set is a Y-shaped shock-absorbing lanyard certified to EN 958: two elastic arms ending in two type K carabiners, joined to a single energy absorber that attaches to the harness. The carabiners clip the fixed steel cable; the absorber is the part that keeps a fall from breaking you.

Two absorber designs are in circulation. The British Mountaineering Council puts it plainly: “The energy absorber can be rope or tape running through a friction brake, or a block containing tear-out webbing.” Tear webbing — two strips stitched together so the stitching rips progressively under load, as Edelrid describes it — has effectively won. The friction brakes are the ones that got recalled.

The set is one of three items — helmet, harness, lanyard. The helmet has its own standards problem; this page is the lanyard.

Why is a weight range printed on the energy absorber?

Because EN 958 is written only for a defined band of users, and outside it the absorber’s physics stop working in both directions. The scope is explicit: energy absorbing systems “for users weighing not less than 40 kg (total weight without equipment) and no more than 120 kg (total weight including the equipment)” (EN 958).

Edelrid’s account of the test regime describes absorbers that must not tear below 1.3 kN at rest, must hold impact force under 3.5 kN for a 40 kg person in a five-meter fall, and under 6 kN for a 120 kg person. The UIAA’s standard 128 tightens the light end for its safety label: with a 40 kg rigid steel mass, “the maximum impact force shall not exceed 3.5 kN (instead of 4 kN as per EN) and the maximum braking length shall not exceed 2 200 mm.” A light user who can’t generate enough force to tear the webbing gets a short, hard stop; a heavy one can exhaust the tearing distance before the fall stops.

The disagreement sits at the bottom of the range. Petzl’s Scorpio technical notice, Climbing Technology’s via ferrata instructions, CAMP’s Set Ferrata Kinetic manual and Black Diamond’s via ferrata instructions all put the 40 kg floor on the climber without equipment. Edelrid’s via ferrata set manual approves the set “exclusively for users with a total weight (climber including equipment) of more than 40 kg and less than 120 kg.” A 37 kg child in three kilos of gear is inside Edelrid’s window and outside everyone else’s.

What did the 2012 recalls actually change?

They ended the friction-brake era and forced a rewrite of the standard. On 16 August 2012, eleven days after a fatal accident, Edelrid recalled seven via ferrata set models built between 2010 and 2012, because the webbing of the elastic arms, after increased use, “may no longer meet the relevant safety standards.” It wasn’t one brand: grough’s report on the follow-up safety meeting lists recalls from AustriAlpin, Climbing Technology, Edelrid, Edelweiss, Mammut, Ocún, Salewa, Singing Rock, Stubai and Wild Country.

Singing Rock’s replacement program names the failure mode: extremely worn sets “show a significant increase of the impact force,” and lanyard strength falls with it.

The standard governing those sets tested a narrower slice of humanity than the people buying them. Planetmountain, reporting the revision as it went to a vote, described the then-current EN 958 as testing “between 50 and 80Kg,” against a revised protocol testing at 40 kg and at 120 kg with maximum sliding of 220 cm. That became EN 958:2017, the reason your set carries a printed weight window at all; it has since been revised to EN 958:2024, cited by Edelrid’s Cable Kit VI.

Recalls didn’t stop in 2013. Black Diamond recalled Easy Rider and Iron Cruiser sets in 2016 over units missing orange safety stitching, which “can allow the ends to unexpectedly detach” (CPSC), and in April 2025 UK authorities recalled Mammut Skywalker Pro sets whose “carabiners may open without the safety catch being pressed” (gov.uk).

Why is a set finished after one fall?

Because the absorber spends itself to work, and there’s no partial credit. Petzl’s Scorpio notice is unambiguous: “Once an energy absorber has deployed in a fall, it may not work to absorb the energy of a second fall,” and a product must be retired when “it has been subjected to a major fall or load.” Climbing Technology tells you how you’ll know: after a fall involving the absorber, “the red safety label will be torn apart; the user must stop using the product and must replace it immediately.” CAMP’s yellow label works the same way: if it emerges from the absorber case, “the via ferrata set must be put out of service immediately.”

The trap is the set that looks nearly fine. Tear stitching that has opened a few centimeters has spent part of its travel and been loaded along its whole length. Ocún’s EN 958 absorber instructions state that an activated progressive-tear strap “is unable (functionally) to safely arrest a subsequent fall”; Mammut is blunter: “you should under no circumstances use your set again.” A rope you can sometimes inspect and keep — see when to retire a rope. An absorber you can’t.

Why isn’t a screwgate carabiner a substitute for a type K?

Because type K under EN 12275 is a different device — self-locking gate, wide opening, extra bending test — and a general-purpose screwgate has to pass none of that. Edelrid’s EN 12275 summary defines type K as a carabiner with an automatic gate locking mechanism, tested with a 21 mm gate-opening pin and required to survive a UIAA 121 bending test of at least 8 kN over a 27 mm edge.

The automatic lock is the point. You unclip and reclip hundreds of times, one hand at a time; a screw sleeve you have to remember to close will eventually be open at the wrong moment. The wide gate matters too: the BMC notes type K carabiners “have a wider opening than normal” to pass over thick cable. Singing Rock’s Phario 360 uses palm-squeeze “PALM Keylock carabiners (EN 12275, type K),” Petzl a wire-lock design, and Kong’s Medale 2.0 uses a double gate. Type K isn’t a guarantee. The 2025 Mammut recall was a type K gate that could open without the catch being pressed.

How long does a via ferrata set last before it expires?

Every maker publishes its own limit, they don’t agree, and no regulator sets one. Here’s what each actually prints.

“Not published” means we couldn’t find the figure on that maker’s public pages, not that none exists; several keep it in the instructions supplied with the set.

Name the disagreement rather than averaging it. Petzl’s rule is that “for plastic or textile products, the maximum lifetime is ten years from the date of manufacture” (Petzl), Black Diamond’s is the same, with the shelf case spelled out. CAMP and Climbing Technology run two clocks instead — Climbing Technology writes: “For textile and plastic products, the maximum lifespan is 12 years from the date of manufacture, of which no more than 10 years from the date of the first use.” An eleven-year-old set is expired under Petzl’s rule and serviceable under CAMP’s. Both are right, for their own products.

Which answers the garage question. Under Petzl’s and Black Diamond’s rules, a set that never left its packaging is finished on its tenth birthday; under Edelrid’s ladder, an unused set gets ten years and a weekly-used one gets three. Careful storage buys the top of that range, not an exemption — Edelrid asks for roughly -10 °C to +30 °C, dry, dark, and free of crushing or tension. Metal is the exception everyone agrees on: Petzl says “the lifespan of metal products is not limited.” The carabiners outlive the absorber they’re sewn to, which is why you replace the set, not the ends.

Why does a via ferrata set have a user weight limit?

Below the floor, a light climber may not load the absorber hard enough to tear it open, so the fall is arrested short and hard. Does a partly torn energy absorber still work?
No. A via ferrata energy absorber is a single-use device, and partly deployed tear webbing is not a fresh absorber with less capacity. Petzl's Scorpio technical notice states that "once an energy absorber has deployed in a fall, it may not work to absorb the energy of a second fall," and Climbing Technology's via ferrata instructions say the absorber "will no longer be able to safely arrest a second fall." Retire the set.
Can you make a via ferrata lanyard from slings and screwgate carabiners?
No, because a via ferrata lanyard's job is limiting impact force and slings don't do that. A fall on a via ferrata can run several meters down a fixed steel cable to the next anchor, and without a tear-webbing or friction absorber the arrest force lands undiluted on the climber and the cable. EN 958 sets both a maximum impact force and a maximum braking length; two slings and two screwgates meet neither.
What does the K mean on a via ferrata carabiner?
K stands for Klettersteig, the German word for via ferrata, and it names a connector class under EN 12275. A type K carabiner has an automatic gate locking mechanism rather than a manual screw sleeve, so it cannot be left unlocked, plus a wide gate to pass over thick fixed cable. Black Diamond's via ferrata instructions describe the mark as denoting "a Type K 'Klettersteig' connector, designed primarily to link a mountaineer to a via ferrata system."
Do manufacturers agree on how long a via ferrata set lasts?
No, and the gap runs to years. Petzl and Black Diamond both cap plastic and textile products at ten years from the date of manufacture, shelf time included. CAMP allows ten years from first use but never past the twelfth year from manufacture, and Climbing Technology publishes the same twelve-year outer limit. Edelrid instead publishes a use-frequency ladder for via ferrata sets: ten years unused, five years occasional, three years weekly, two years commercial.
