When should you retire a climbing or rescue rope?

Short answer

There's no single date. Retire immediately if the core shows through the sheath, if the rope has met chemicals, if friction has glazed or melted it, or after a severe fall. Otherwise makers cap textile life around ten years — but Sterling cuts that to one year under heavy use, and no US regulator sets a rope expiry at all.

A rope has two clocks running on it. One is the calendar, which starts wherever the maker decides and keeps running whether you climb or not. The other is the wear clock, which only runs when the rope is working — and can run out in weeks.

Almost every argument about rope retirement is really an argument about which clock someone is reading.

When should you retire a climbing or rescue rope?

Immediately if the core is visible through the sheath, if the rope has been in contact with chemicals, if friction has glazed or melted it, or if it has taken a severe fall — and otherwise at whichever comes first, the maker’s calendar limit or the maker’s usage limit.

The event list is where manufacturers agree almost word for word. The calendar is where they don’t agree at all.

Does any US regulator set a rope expiry date?

No. OSHA’s fall-protection rules are written around condition, not age. 29 CFR 1926.502(d)(21) requires that personal fall arrest systems “be inspected prior to each use for wear, damage and other deterioration, and defective components shall be removed from service.” Paragraph (d)(19) requires that any component subjected to impact loading be “immediately removed from service” until a competent person finds it undamaged and suitable for reuse.

Neither paragraph contains a number of years. That is the same finding we reached on harness retirement: every calendar limit in circulation is a manufacturer’s, and it governs because the manufacturer’s instructions govern — not because a regulator wrote it down.

Which retirement triggers do the manufacturers agree on?

Four: core visible through the sheath, chemical contact, heat damage, and a severe fall. These recur across makers who agree on very little else.

Edelrid’s dynamic rope manual requires discarding a rope after “an extreme fall (fall factor >1),” if “the sheath has been damaged (so that the core is visible),” or after “contact with chemicals” — then adds a catch-all: the product goes “if there is even the slightest doubt as to its serviceability.”

Mammut names the same three in its rope support article — sheath damage exposing the core, a fall above factor 1.0, and acid exposure, which it ties specifically to car batteries — alongside obvious cuts, abnormal thickness variation, stiffness, excessive softness and discoloration.

Sterling lists “exposed cores” and “damage due to glazing or hard spots” next to “excessive fraying,” “softness or stiffness” and “lack of uniformity in diameter, color or texture,” plus any exposure to “excessive UV light, sharp edges, or any type of chemical contamination” (Sterling Rope).

Teufelberger is the blunt one: “Following a fall, it is absolutely necessary that the product be replaced!” Its discard list also covers “contact with chemicals, acids, oils, solvents,” “signs of extreme wear (abrasion, furring)” and “fusion or signs of melting (after extreme thermal loads).”

Petzl splits the inspection by layer: core defects are “hard spots, swelling, soft or crushed areas”; sheath defects are “cuts, burns, frayed strands, fuzzy areas or signs of chemicals.”

Chemicals deserve their own line, because contamination is the one trigger you cannot see. A rope that spent a night beside a leaking battery looks exactly like a rope that didn’t. It is also why washing a rope has rules attached rather than being a laundry job.

What maximum lifespan does each maker actually publish?

The published ceilings cluster at ten years — but three of the seven makers we checked publish no maximum at all on their own public pages.

“Not published” means we could not find the figure on the maker’s own public pages during this research. Several state plainly that the number lives in the instructions supplied with the rope — Teufelberger writes that “for details regarding the service life of the various products, please see the relevant manufacturer’s information documents.” Petzl’s and Edelrid’s figures cover textile products generally rather than ropes specifically.

Where do makers disagree about when the clock starts?

Petzl starts the clock at manufacture, Edelrid runs a separate storage clock, and Sterling doesn’t start a calendar clock at all.

Petzl’s position is the strictest and the easiest to state: “For plastic or textile products, the maximum lifetime is ten years from the date of manufacture.” No shelf-time allowance. A rope that sat two years in a warehouse reaches Petzl’s limit two years into your ownership, unused.

Edelrid splits the two clocks apart and publishes both: “maximum lifespan under optimal storage conditions and without use: 14 years,” against “occasional and appropriate use without obvious wear and tear and with optimal storage: 10 years.”

Sterling doesn’t play the game at all. Its figures are working life against use intensity, and its ceiling — “rarely used: up to 10 years” — is a use category rather than an anniversary.

We aren’t going to resolve that for you, because it isn’t resolvable from outside. Each figure is that manufacturer’s judgment about its own construction and its own regulatory culture, and the one that binds your rope is the one printed in your rope’s instructions.

Does how often you use it matter more than how old it is?

Yes, by a wide margin — and two makers publish the arithmetic. Sterling’s working-life figures for average and proper use run “extensive use: up to 1 year,” “regular to occasional use: up to 5 years,” “rarely used: up to 10 years.” That is a tenfold spread on the same rope, decided entirely by how hard it works.

Edelrid arrives at the same place from the other direction. Under extreme conditions — frequent falls, rappelling, top-roping, dirt and mechanical abrasion — a rope’s safety reserves may be reduced enough “after only a few weeks of use that it will have to be replaced.” Its gentler guidance runs the other way: a rope used occasionally and stored carefully “can provide three to six years of service,” and a rope taking lots of falls on a very regular basis should be downgraded to top-rope use “after one year.”

If you take one thing from the published figures, take this: a ten-year number describes a rope that has barely worked. It is not a service schedule for a rope that has.

What wears out first?

The ends. Black Diamond’s QC Lab pull-tested worn ropes against new ones and found that frayed end sections broke markedly weaker than the middle of the same rope, with some worn samples failing at under 7 kN outside the knot. Their advice is the practical one: cut the beaten ends off, or buy a new rope.

Mammut makes the same split explicit — damage near the ends may let you shorten the rope and carry on, while damage in the middle section usually retires it.

Edge contact is the other accelerator, and it doesn’t need a fall to matter. A loaded rope moving across an edge is doing something categorically different from a rope hanging in free air, which is the subject we took apart in our piece on Edelrid’s Bulletproof treatment.

How do you find out how old a rope actually is?

Sterling prints the answer inside the rope. Pull the sheath back at the end and the identification tape woven into the core strands names “the manufacturer, the year and quarter it was made and the certifications it meets.” Sterling’s instruction if that tape is missing is unambiguous: “retire the rope from use immediately.”

Mammut prints the production year on the end of the rope and on the packaging, and tells owners to write down the purchase date separately — sensible, given that three of the makers above measure from somewhere other than the factory.

Petzl recommends “an inspection at least every 12 months, but your intensity of use and any exceptional event in the life of the product may cause you to inspect your PPE more frequently.” Treat twelve months as a floor. It is the interval for a rope nothing has happened to.

The short version

Retire on the event, not the anniversary: core showing, chemical contact, glazing or melting, or a severe fall each end a rope on the day they happen, whatever its age. The calendar limits exist, cluster at ten years, and are worth knowing — but Petzl starts counting at the factory, Edelrid runs a separate fourteen-year storage clock, and Sterling doesn’t count years at all, so no single date survives contact with all three. Sterling’s own numbers make the real point: the same rope is good for ten years rarely used and one year in extensive use. Find the instructions that came with your rope, write the in-service date on it the day you first use it, and inspect the ends hardest, because that’s where the strength goes first.

How long does a climbing rope last?
Rope life depends far more on how hard the rope works than on how old it is. Sterling Rope publishes a working life of up to ten years for a rarely used rope, up to five years for regular to occasional use, and up to one year under extensive use. Edelrid's dynamic rope manual allows ten years for occasional use with optimal storage, and notes that under extreme conditions a rope's safety reserves can be spent after only a few weeks. Ten years is a ceiling, not a schedule.
Can you still use a rope if the core is showing?
No. Sheath damage that exposes the core is one of the few retirement triggers every rope manufacturer states outright. Edelrid's dynamic rope manual requires discarding a rope if "the sheath has been damaged (so that the core is visible)," and Mammut lists sheath damage exposing the core among the faults that end a rope's life. If the exposed section is close to an end, some makers allow cutting the damaged length off; damage in the middle retires the whole rope.
Does a rope expire if it has never been used?
Manufacturers disagree, and the gap is years wide. Petzl states that for plastic or textile products the maximum lifetime is ten years from the date of manufacture, with no allowance for time spent on a shelf. Edelrid's dynamic rope manual runs a separate storage clock: a maximum lifespan of fourteen years under optimal storage conditions without use, against ten years of occasional use. The same unused rope can be expired under one rule and serviceable under the other.
Should you cut the ends off a worn rope instead of retiring it?
Often yes, because rope ends take the most abuse and lose strength first. Black Diamond's QC Lab pull-tested worn ropes and found frayed end sections broke markedly weaker than the middle of the same rope, with some worn samples failing at under 7 kN outside the knot. Mammut states that damage near the ends may allow cutting the rope shorter, while damage in the middle section usually means retirement. Cutting works only where the rest of the rope still passes inspection.
How can you tell how old a rope is?
Rope makers print the date into the rope. Sterling weaves an identification tape into the core strands naming the manufacturer, the year and quarter it was made, and the certifications it meets — and instructs owners to retire the rope immediately if that tape is missing. Mammut prints the production year on the end of the rope and on the packaging. Because manufacturers disagree about whether the clock starts at manufacture or at first use, it's worth writing the in-service date on the rope as well.
