Pierre and Janine Beal founded the company at Vienne in 1951 making shoelaces and cords; their son Michel turned it to climbing ropes in 1976, and their grandsons Frédéric and Philippe run it today from a new 10,000-square-meter factory that spins twelve million meters of rope a year. The idea Beal is known for is Unicore — bonding the sheath to the core so a cut cover can't slide and bunch, and a damaged rope stays climbable long enough to matter. The numbers on this page come from regional economic reporting rather than audited accounts, and the Unicore patent number is one thing we couldn't pin down — both worth knowing.

Every kernmantle rope has one structural anxiety: the sheath and the core are separate things. Cut the sheath on an edge and it can slide, bunch, and strip like a sock — leaving you holding exposed core with the damage migrating.
Unicore is Beal’s answer, and it’s conceptually simple: bond the sheath to the core along the rope’s length. Cut the cover and it stays put — no slippage, no bunching — and Beal’s claim, stated plainly on its pages, is that a rope with sheath damage remains usable long enough to get you out of the situation that damaged it. Beal describes the technology as patented; we couldn’t pin the patent number down, so we pass the claim along with that attribution rather than as a registry fact.
Where the idea earns its keep isn’t the crag — it’s working rope. The Access semi-static lines under EN 1891, the Spelenium caving ropes, the Pro Water swiftwater line: ropes whose job descriptions include edges, grit and abrasion. A bonded sheath on a rope-access line is the difference between an incident report and a bad moment.
And on the dynamic side, one specific credential worth naming: the Joker 9.1 Unicore — the thin triple-rated rope that made skinny cords mainstream — holds an active UIAA certificate on file through the end of 2026. Third-party paper, checkable, the way this site likes its claims.
