How do you wash a climbing or rescue rope?
Short answer
Wash it in cool water with a soap the maker allows, then air-dry it out of the sun and away from heat. Never a dryer, never bleach or solvents. Petzl, Edelrid, Mammut and Teufelberger all cap washing at 30°C; Sterling says a hot machine cycle is fine. Check the instructions printed for your own rope, because they govern.
A dirty rope isn’t just unpleasant to handle. Fine grit works down between the sheath yarns and stays there, and every bend over an edge or pass through a descender grinds those particles against the fibers from the inside, where no inspection will see them. Beal states the mechanism plainly on its own rope-cleaner page: regular cleaning “removes the impurities that contribute to abrasion and premature wear”.
So washing is maintenance, not cosmetics. The awkward part is that the makers publish genuinely different instructions for doing it — different temperature ceilings, different machine-washing positions, and a flat contradiction about whether to hang a rope up to dry.
How do you wash a rope?
Run or soak it in cool water with a mild, non-bleach soap, rinse until the water runs clear, then air-dry it in the shade away from any heat source. That sequence is common to every maker page we opened.
Everything past it is contested.
What water temperature is safe?
Four makers cap it at 30°C; Sterling says a hot machine cycle is fine. This is the real disagreement, and it isn’t a rounding difference.
Petzl instructs users to wash ropes in “lukewarm soapy water (ph neutral, 30° C maximum)”, then rinse thoroughly with fresh tap water. Edelrid puts hand washing in “lukewarm water” first and allows the 30°C delicates cycle as an alternative. Mammut specifies “30°C (cold wash 65–85F)”. Teufelberger is the blunt one: “Temperature must never be higher than 30°C”.
Then Sterling: “It is okay to use the hot water setting on your clothes washer as it likely won’t damage the rope.” The stated basis is that nylon isn’t harmed until it has seen “over 300˚ water for over 5 hours” — a figure the page prints without naming Fahrenheit or Celsius. Sterling’s own static rope care guidelines put it more conservatively: “Wash in warm to hot water with a mild soap.”
Both positions are defensible because they answer different questions: 30°C is a ceiling set to be safe across every fiber, coating and marking a rope might carry, while Sterling’s is an argument about what nylon can survive. Only one of them is printed in the instructions that came with your rope, and that’s the one that governs. If you don’t have them, wash at 30°C — it satisfies everybody.
Can you put a rope in a washing machine?
Yes — every maker that addresses the question permits it, and each attaches different conditions.
Petzl says to choose the “30° C delicate synthetic setting, without spin cycle.” Edelrid allows the delicates cycle at 30°C with the same warning: “don’t use the spin cycle.” Mammut asks for a “wool garments” program if the machine has one. Teufelberger is the most relaxed — “there is no restriction in use of program” — but agrees spinning should not be used unless quick drying is necessary. Sterling specifies a front-loading washer, the rope daisy-chained inside a mesh stuff sack, and two rinse cycles.
The bag and the daisy chain are the practical part: a loose rope in a drum finds its way into places it shouldn’t, and Sterling’s warning is that it “could get stuck and break the machine or damage the rope.” Sterling still names the bathtub as “the safest way,” and its separate static-rope care sheet describes hand washing only, without mentioning a machine at all.
None of the pages we read endorses a top-loader with a center agitator. None forbids one either — they specify a front-loader and leave it there.

Beal’s row is a gap in our research as much as in Beal’s own pages: the company sells a rope detergent and explains why cleaning matters, but we found no temperature, machine-wash position or drying instruction anywhere on its site. Rather than borrow a number from a retailer’s blog, the cells say so.
What soap is safe, and what actually damages a rope?
Detergent choice changes how much strength the rope loses, and the difference is large enough to measure. Teufelberger washed a polyester rope eight times at 30°C without spinning, drying it naturally for 24 hours between cycles, then tested residual breaking strength. A special rope detergent cost the rope 2%. Washing gel cost 22%. Ordinary washing powder cost 41%.
That is the case for the rules the others publish. Petzl’s is the narrowest: “Use only household face and body soap. All other cleaning products, for example solvents, stain removers, degreasers, etc. are too strong and are incompatible with nylon.” Petzl also rules out laundry detergent and high-pressure water sprayers. Teufelberger says to use rope detergents and “Do not use a textile detergent.” Edelrid asks for “a mild synthetic detergent from a specialist retailer.” Mammut asks for a mild detergent, eco recommended. Sterling’s line is the shortest: “Do Not Use Bleach!”
One product people ask about goes unaddressed. None of the five maker pages we read mentions fabric softener at all — not to permit it, not to forbid it. The nearest published rules that would catch it are Petzl’s exclusion of everything but face and body soap, and Teufelberger’s exclusion of textile detergents. That’s an inference from their rules, not a statement either has made.
How do you dry a rope?
In the shade, away from every heat source, and never in a dryer. No maker dissents on any part of that.
They disagree on the position. Sterling says to “hang it loosely out of direct sunlight.” Edelrid says the opposite: “don’t hang it up and avoid direct sunlight. The best way to dry it is to spread it out on the ground in a cool, dark place.” Mammut is firmer still — “never hang it up to dry or leave it in the sun or on a heater and NEVER tumble dry it” — and recommends “air drying in a washroom on a towel or tarp.”
The objection to hanging is the rope’s own weight bearing on wet fibers for a day or more. Laid flat costs you nothing, so lay it flat.
Dry it completely before it goes back in the bag or on a job — Teufelberger’s instruction is explicit that this happens “prior to storage or use.” It matters for a second reason too: nylon rope is measurably weaker while it’s wet.
Does washing shrink a rope?
Yes, and by more than most people expect. Teufelberger’s tests found a polyamide rope shrank 19% after repeated washing, while ropes of polyester, Dyneema or aramid blends shrank by no more than 4%. Nylon is polyamide, which means most climbing and rescue ropes sit in the group that moves.
Petzl treats this as a documentation problem, not a nuisance: “Washing a rope may reduce its length.” Its instruction is to measure the rope, re-mark the length if it changed, and check the marking is still legible afterward. On a logged rope, a length mark that no longer matches the log is a real finding.
Teufelberger’s first bullet is the one to remember: “Do not wash more often than necessary.”
What makes a rope retired rather than just dirty?
Chemical contact. Grit abrades and washes out; a chemical attacks the fiber itself and leaves nothing to see.
Sterling’s care guidelines are direct: “If you suspect contact with any harmful chemical, retire the rope,” and warn that “Damage by chemicals can be invisible to the eye.” The same sheet splits the risk by material — acids with nylon products, alkalis with polyester ones. Edelrid lists contact with chemicals, “in particular acids,” as grounds for replacement. Mammut gives the everyday version: acid exposure “can happen if it is stored next to a car battery for instance.”
Petzl’s rule is the strictest, and it comes before the wash. A rope must not show “any dirt stains that could resemble contact with chemicals, as this would be grounds for retirement.” A suspicious stain is not a cleaning job. Once it’s washed you’ve destroyed the evidence and kept the damage. Grit is one abrasive; hardware is another. A worn carabiner can cut a rope long before it’s weak enough to break itself — a failure mode a clean rope doesn’t protect you from.
The short version
Cool water, mild non-bleach soap, thorough rinse, flat in the shade to dry — that combination is endorsed by everyone and forbidden by nobody. Machine washing is permitted by every maker that addresses it: mesh bag, gentle program, spin cycle off. The two disagreements worth knowing are the temperature ceiling, where four makers say 30°C and Sterling says a hot cycle is fine, and the drying position, where Sterling says hang it and Edelrid and Mammut say don’t. If a rope has touched a chemical, or carries a stain that might be one, none of this applies — that rope is retired, not dirty.

A radiator, a heater and a hot car are the same mistake as a dryer.
