What is the difference between General Use and Technical Use rescue gear?

Short answer

G and T are load classes, not quality grades. NFPA publishes a higher minimum breaking strength for General Use gear than for Technical Use across every category — rope, connectors, pulleys, descenders. A third letter, E, covers escape equipment. The standard behind all three is now NFPA 2500; NFPA 1983 was folded into it in 2022.

Buy hardware for US technical rescue and you’ll meet two letters immediately. A carabiner, pulley, descender or rope gets sold as “NFPA G” or “NFPA T,” usually with a price gap, and the natural reading is that G is the good one and T is the cheap one.

That reading is wrong in a way that matters. The letters describe how much load the gear was tested against and nothing else. What follows is what each class requires, where the numbers come from, and the change to the standard most published writing hasn’t caught up with.

What do the letters G and T actually mean on rescue gear?

G and T are load classes — the size of the load the gear was tested against, not a grade of workmanship. The split is between equipment for a rescuer plus a subject and equipment for one person.

FireRescue1 sets out the arithmetic the classes came from: General Use assumes “2 x 300 pounds x 15 = 9,000 pounds” and Technical Use “1 x 300 pounds x 15 = 4,500 pounds” — a two-person and a one-person load, each multiplied by a 15:1 factor (FireRescue1, NFPA 1983 explained).

The class is not a recommendation. Roco Rescue, summarizing the current standard, notes that teams “can elect to use either technical use– or general use–labeled equipment based on the anticipated loads of the incident,” and that “NFPA does not establish or endorse a particular safety factor or ratio” (Roco Rescue, 11 mm rope and NFPA requirements). The letter says what the gear passed. Your authority having jurisdiction decides what you may hang off it.

What minimum strengths does each class require?

Each category has its own floor, and the General Use figure runs roughly one and a half to two times the Technical Use figure.

Figures are CMC’s published summaries of NFPA 1983 — hardware here, rope here — both referencing the 2012 edition. CMC publishes no escape figure for the hardware categories, so those cells say so rather than guess. One disagreement to name: FireRescue1 states Technical Use “carabiners are now 22 kN/4,950 pounds,” where CMC gives 27 kN. We haven’t read the standard text, so we can’t say which edition each reflects.

The pulley row is a breaking strength, not a statement about how kindly the sheave treats the rope — a separate question, covered in pulley sheave diameter.

Why is there a third letter, E?

E is Escape, a class for gear a firefighter uses to get themselves out of a building, and it sits below both General Use and Technical Use. The load case is different: one person, once, in an emergency, in a package carried all shift.

CMC’s rope summary puts escape rope at 7.5 mm to 9.5 mm with a 13.5 kN (3,034 lbf) 3-sigma minimum. Sterling Rope’s EscapeTech is a live example — 7.5 mm, MBS 17.4 kN / 3,911 lb, marked NFPA 2500 (1983) (Sterling, EscapeTech) — and Sterling describes the systems as being for “rapid egress and self-rescue” (Sterling, fire escape kits and systems).

Two caveats. Harnesses and belts don’t use G/T/E at all: CMC’s Fulcrum Escape Belt lists its rating simply as “ESCAPE BELT,” publishing no strength figure on that page (CMC, Fulcrum Escape Belt), and CMC’s harness sheet works in Class II, Class III and escape belts instead (CMC, harness certification standards). And there is a second, unrelated E: PMI reports that in the revision now in ballot, “the ‘E’ designation for Auxiliary Equipment has been dropped,” that category having had no standardized test methods behind it (PMI, NFPA 2500 equipment revisions).

What happened to NFPA 1983?

NFPA 1983 was folded into NFPA 2500, and product markings changed with it. The ANSI webstore listing puts it plainly: “NFPA 2500 is a combination of Standards NFPA 1670, NFPA 1858, and NFPA 1983” (ANSI webstore, NFPA 2500-2022). Markings went from “NFPA 1983 (2017 ED)” to “NFPA 2500 (1983) 2022 ED,” followed by the G, T or E letter (Roco Rescue, new NFPA markings).

The cutoff took two goes. The Safety Equipment Institute told manufacturers that “effective immediately, SEI will only test and certify products to the 2022 Edition of NFPA 2500,” with 2017-edition stock to be depleted by September 15, 2022, after which manufacturers “shall remove all certification labels and product labels indicating compliance with the 2017 Edition of NFPA 1983” from items under their control (SEI, transition bulletin). That date then moved: PMI reports a Tentative Interim Amendment pushed it into early 2023 (PMI, NFPA delays implementation), and CMC told dealers that “Manufacturers must transition to selling equipment tested and marked to NFPA 2500 (1983) 2022 ED after March 15th” (CMC, NFPA transition).

None of that obsoleted gear in service. CMC is explicit: “There is no NFPA requirement to stop using certain products. CMC Dealers and Customers may continue buying, selling, and using equipment marked to older versions of the standard.”

NFPA 2500:2027 was published 06-05-2026 under a new title, “Standard on Organizational Capabilities for Technical Search and Rescue and Life Safety Rope and Equipment for Emergency Services” (Intertek Inform, NFPA 2500:2027). The standard text isn’t free — Accuris lists the 2022 edition at $207.00 and flags it as historical (Accuris, NFPA 2500) — so every figure here is attributed to a manufacturer, certifier or trade page we opened, not to the standard.

Do manufacturer product pages still show the old marking?

Some do, and one is easy to check for yourself. SMC’s NFPA Aluminum Locking D page reads “UL certified to NFPA 1983 ‘T’ Technical Use” and “Certified by Underwriter’s Laboratories to exceed the NFPA 1983 ‘T’ - Technical Use requirement of 27kN.” The string 2500 does not appear on that page (SMC, NFPA Aluminum Locking D).

Others dropped the edition entirely. Rock Exotica’s rockSteel lists “CE / ANSI / NFPA ‘G’” with an MBS-Major of 50 kN and no standard number (Rock Exotica, rockSteel). CMC’s ProSeries key-lock carabiners do the same, showing only “UL Classified to NFPA - General Use” beside 40 kN major and 11 kN minor (CMC, ProSeries carabiners). Some are fully current: Petzl lists the Bm’D as “CE EN 362, EAC, ANSI Z359.12, ANSI Z459.1, NFPA 2500 Technical Use, CSA Z259.12,” with 32 kN major, 16 kN minor and 10 kN gate open (Petzl, Bm’D).

Is an NFPA class the same as a CE mark?

No — they’re separate systems with different tests and different thresholds, and a product can satisfy one having never been submitted for the other. Harken Industrial’s pulley catalog states that “All Harken Industrial pulleys are certified to EN13157 Machinery Directive for lifting goods and equipment,” with no NFPA class anywhere in the document (Harken Industrial, pulleys). Petzl’s Bm’D carries both at once.

One claim needs care: it’s often said CE marking is self-declared where NFPA is third-party certified. SATRA’s account of EU Regulation 2016/425 supports only half of that: Category I PPE goes through Module A, “internal production control,” with no notified body — but Category II requires a notified body type-examination, and Category III, which SATRA lists as including fall protection, requires type-examination plus ongoing production surveillance (SATRA, European conformity assessment of PPE). Rope access and fall protection gear is not the self-declared category.

On the NFPA side, outside testing is how the mark is earned. Sterling explains that equipment “needs to be tested by an outside lab,” naming Underwriters Laboratories (Sterling, Goodbye NFPA 1983 (sort of)); PMI defines a certified product as one “verified by a third-party certifier, including label and follow-up audits” (PMI, NFPA 2500 cornerstone). The three kN figures stamped on a carabiner are the visible half of that; the audit is the rest.

Are the class figures working loads?

No — they’re minimum breaking strengths derived from breaking samples in a lab. CMC describes the 3-sigma requirement as one that “ensures that at least 99.87% of the carabiners in the population exceed the specified strength,” calculated from the five samples the NFPA test method calls for (CMC, 3σ MBS explained).

Nothing in a G or T figure accounts for a knot, a shock load, an aging rope or a line over a parapet — see what MBS means on a rope for that gap, and edge protection for rope for the failure mode the number ignores entirely.

The short version

G, T and E are load classes, not quality grades: General Use gear survives a bigger test load than Technical Use, and Escape gear less than either, with rope floors of 40 kN, 20 kN and 13.5 kN per CMC. All three come out of one standard and the same kind of outside lab, so the letter says what a piece of gear passed, not how well it was made. The standard changed name in 2022 — NFPA 1983 is now part of NFPA 2500 and markings read “NFPA 2500 (1983) 2022 ED” — yet plenty of manufacturer web copy still says 1983, SMC’s included. Read the stamp on the item, and treat every figure here as a breaking strength, not a load you are cleared to apply.

What replaced NFPA 1983?
NFPA 2500 replaced it. The National Fire Protection Association combined NFPA 1983 (equipment), NFPA 1858 (selection, care and maintenance) and NFPA 1670 (operations and training) into one document, first issued as the 2022 edition. Roco Rescue reports that gear once marked "NFPA 1983 (2017 ED)" now reads "NFPA 2500 (1983) 2022 ED." A 2027 edition of NFPA 2500 was published on 06-05-2026.
What does the E marking on rescue equipment mean?
E stands for Escape — a class of firefighter self-rescue gear held to lower strength floors than General Use or Technical Use. CMC's published summary of NFPA 1983 puts escape rope at 7.5 mm to 9.5 mm with a 3-sigma minimum breaking strength of 13.5 kN (3,034 lbf), against 40 kN for General Use rope. Sterling describes its fire escape systems as being for "rapid egress and self-rescue."
Is General Use gear better quality than Technical Use gear?
No. General Use and Technical Use are load classes, not quality tiers, and both go through the same third-party certification process. What differs is the test load the gear has to survive and, for rope, the diameter band it has to fall in: CMC's published summary of NFPA 1983 puts General Use rope at 11 mm to 16 mm and Technical Use rope at 9.5 mm to 12.5 mm.
Who certifies that rescue gear meets NFPA 2500?
An independent laboratory does, not the manufacturer. Sterling Rope explains that equipment "needs to be tested by an outside lab, to ensure that the manufacturer meets all the requirements," and names Underwriters Laboratories as one of the commonly used labs. The Safety Equipment Institute also certifies to NFPA 2500 and contracted Intertek as its testing laboratory. Certification covers labels and follow-up audits, not just a one-time pull test.
Does NFPA certification mean a product also meets European EN standards?
No. NFPA is a US consensus standard and CE marking to EN standards is a separate European system with its own tests and its own numbers. A product can hold one, both or neither. Harken Industrial states that all its pulleys are certified to EN 13157 and lists no NFPA class at all, while Petzl's Bm'D carabiner lists CE EN 362 and NFPA 2500 Technical Use side by side.
