Ferndale, Washington, since 1967 — rescue hardware made in the USA, UL-certified to NFPA, and owned by the sailing-hardware company your rescue rig already trusts.
Seattle Manufacturing Corporation started in 1967 with Jim Clark machining an oval carabiner for Mary Anderson of the original REI co-op, and it grew into the quiet standard of American rescue hardware: pulleys, descenders and carabiners that fire departments and SAR teams specify by the NFPA letter on them. Everything is made in Ferndale, Washington. The company is part of Harken, the employee-owned sailing-hardware maker — the same load-handling pedigree the rescue world already borrows — and its certification pages read the way this site wishes every brand's did: UL certification to NFPA, G or T, rope sizes and kilonewtons, model by model.

The first SMC product was a favor. Jim Clark, machinist, made an oval carabiner in 1967 for Mary Anderson — of the original REI co-op store, the outfit she’d co-founded to get Seattle climbers decent gear. The favor became Seattle Manufacturing Corporation, and the company that grew from it became something specific: the American machine shop of the rescue world.
The letters on the hardware
Rescue gear in the United States speaks a particular language, and SMC is fluent in it. The claim that matters on its certification pages: NFPA equipment certified by UL to NFPA 1983 as carried into NFPA 2500 — the standard American fire and rescue services specify against.
The language has two words worth learning. G — General Use — is the heavy rating, for system hardware expected to take rescue loads with big margins; several SMC pulleys and carabiners clear the benchmark 40 kN figures that make procurement officers relax. T — Technical Use — is the lighter-duty rating for personal-scale work. SMC’s Figure 8 with ears wears both, printed plainly: NFPA T at 13.5 kN on 9.5–12.5 mm ropes, NFPA G at 22 kN on 11–16 mm ropes — same forging, rated per configuration, no ambiguity for the equipment officer who has to sign.
One working caution from SMC’s own pages: the older NFPA 1983 wording and the newer 2500 wording coexist across the catalog as editions roll over. Quote the standard from the product page of the exact item, edition and all — the habit this site preaches for headlamp certifications applies to life-safety hardware doubly.
Everything is made in the USA, at the Ferndale, Washington facility, under ISO 9001 — an unqualified origin claim, of the kind this roster has learned to prize precisely because so few brands can make one.
The Harken thread
Here the roster loops back on itself pleasantly. SMC is part of Harken, the employee-owned sailing-hardware company — and Harken’s name already appears on this site, on the CMC page, where marine-grade load handling crosses into rescue winches. The same block-and-tackle pedigree that trims grand-prix sailboats now stands behind the pulleys in American rescue caches, once as partner, once as parent.
Employee ownership, meanwhile, joins the roster’s small honor roll of structures without an exit clock — alongside the foundation behind ZEISS and one man’s seventy years at Maglite.
Where SMC fits
Team caches. The stainless pulleys and the 3“ PMP are what hauling systems are taught on, and what departments standardize around.
Rope technicians. The CrossOver Tri-lock and the dual-rated Figure 8 — G-rated confidence at personal-kit weight.
Swiftwater teams. The pulley built to eat grit and keep turning.
Not for: sport climbers counting grams — that shelf belongs to Grivel, DMM, CAMP and Petzl. SMC machines for the rescue load, and it shows on the scale. Against its own neighbors — CMC, Rock Exotica, CMI — the choice is mostly system philosophy and procurement habit; all of them belong in the conversation.
