Do you need a carbon monoxide detector on a boat?

Short answer

Yes. Any boat with an enclosed cabin or sleeping space should carry a marine-rated carbon monoxide alarm. CO is colourless and odourless, its early symptoms are indistinguishable from a long day on the water, and it can reach you from your own generator, your own exhaust drawn back aboard, or the boat rafted up beside you.

Most boat-safety spending goes toward things you can see going wrong — fire, water, weather. The hazard that has killed people while they slept is the one with no colour, no smell and a symptom list identical to a good day on the water.

Do you need a carbon monoxide detector on a boat?

Yes, if your boat has an enclosed accommodation space. A marine-rated CO alarm is among the cheapest items you can put aboard and one of the very few that addresses a hazard you cannot detect with your own senses.

The argument against it is always the same — my boat is small, I’m only out for the day, I’d notice. You would not notice. That is the entire mechanism.

Where does the carbon monoxide come from?

Three sources, and the third surprises people.

Your generator. The most common source on boats with one fitted, and the reason people have died at anchor overnight with the genset running.

Your own exhaust, coming back. The airflow around a moving vessel can pull exhaust back into the cockpit and the cabin — the effect is well documented on boats with a large aft canvas or a swim platform, and it worsens at slow speed or with a following wind.

The boat next to you. At a raft-up, a fuel dock or a crowded anchorage, CO from a neighbouring vessel’s exhaust can accumulate in your cockpit. You can do everything right on your own boat and still be exposed.

Add fuel-burning cooking and heating appliances and the picture is complete: a gas produced by ordinary equipment, working normally, in a space designed to keep weather out.

Why won’t a hardware-store detector do?

Because the rating is for a house.

A residential CO alarm is designed for a stable indoor environment on mains power. A boat is humid, salty, vibrating, temperature-cycling and running on DC. Marine-rated alarms are specified for that, and the standards that apply — ABYC guidance among them — are written for the marine context.

Read what the specific alarm is certified for rather than assuming the manufacturer’s reputation covers it. What do the symptoms look like?

Headache. Nausea. Dizziness. Drowsiness.

  • More than one person feels unwell at the same time. Seasickness is personal; a gas is not.

Does the alarm itself expire?

Yes, and this is the part almost nobody checks.

CO sensors have a finite service life and alarms carry a replacement date on the unit. Critically, the test button does not test the sensor — it verifies the electronics and the sounder. An expired alarm can pass its test and still fail to detect gas.

So: go and look at the date on the alarm on your boat. If you bought the boat used, assume nothing about what the previous owner fitted or when. This is the same problem as expired flares and an EPIRB registered to a previous owner — safety equipment that looks like coverage and isn’t.
