Dakota Lithium
Seattle, with the engineering in Grand Forks — LiFePO4 batteries carrying an 11-year warranty, double what the category usually dares.
Dakota Lithium builds LiFePO4 batteries from 4.5Ah powersports cells up to 48V house banks, headquartered in Seattle with engineering and its original assembly line in Grand Forks, North Dakota, and backs them with an 11-year warranty — roughly double the category norm. The company publishes no founding year, and its cycle-life claims range from 5,000 on product listings to "6,000–10,000" on its story page. The warranty is the hard number here; treat the cycle figures as marketing.
- 11 yearsWarranty across the battery line, per Dakota Lithium
- 5,000Cycle claim on current product listings — Dakota's figure
- Grand Forks, NDWhere the engineering and original assembly line sit
What we'd reach for
- DL+ 12V 135Ah heated dual-purposeStarts the engine and runs the trolling motor, with heating for the shoulder seasons the brand was named for.
- 12V 10Ah MiniThe fish-finder and kayak size — the small end of the line that made the brand a fixture in fishing.
- PS2400 power stationThe sealed-box entry — Dakota's move onto the power-station shelf the rest of this batch lives on.
An 11-year warranty on a lithium battery is a company betting on itself in public. Most of the category stops at five; Dakota Lithium puts eleven on everything and prints it on the homepage.
The company is headquartered in Seattle, and the story runs through Grand Forks, North Dakota — a factory where, in its own words, the brand was “born out of this rugged landscape”, with batteries “engineered in Grand Forks”. The company’s own history telling is that it grew out of e-bike battery work, kept assembling in North Dakota, and later added assembly in Seattle. Co-founder Michael Shope is the CTO — one of the few named people in the company’s public story.
What they build
LiFePO4 across an unusually wide span: 12V through 72V, from a 4.5Ah powersports battery to the DL+ heated dual-purpose 135Ah and 320Ah formats, plus the PS2400 power station and folding panels. The markets Dakota leads with are telling — trolling motors and marine fishing first, then RV and overland, powersports, golf carts and off-grid solar. This is the brand you meet through a fish finder, not a spec sheet.
The heated dual-purpose batteries are the distinctive product: cranking and deep-cycle in one box, with cell heating for exactly the ice-fishing and shoulder-season use the branding promises.
The 11-year bet
The warranty is real, stated everywhere, and administered against your original receipt — keep the paperwork, because the company says it may ask. Eleven years roughly doubles the ten that Battle Born offers on its flagship and clears the five-year norm of the import shelf twice over. A warranty is also only a promise about the future of a private company, which brings us to the next section.
Where they fall down
No founding year, anywhere. We opened four of the company’s own pages and none states when Dakota Lithium was founded. For a brand whose identity is a decade-plus warranty, the absence of a corporate date is a genuine oddity, and we won’t supply one it doesn’t publish.
The cycle numbers disagree with each other. Product listings say 5,000 cycles; the story page claims “6,000 – 10,000 cycles” and “6000 vs. 500 cycles for other lithium batteries”. That comparison undersells competitors who publish 3,000–5,000 — and no test protocol is published for any of Dakota’s figures. All of them are manufacturer claims.
Cell provenance is unpublished. “Engineered in Grand Forks” and assembled in North Dakota and Seattle is the stated footprint; where the cells come from is not.
Where Dakota Lithium fits
Fishing, first. Kayaks, ice shacks, trolling motors — the niche where the brand earned its word of mouth.
Powersports and small machines. The 4.5–20Ah end, where lithium’s weight saving is most felt.
Mid-price house banks. Above the import shelf, below Battle Born, workable inside a component system.
Not for: anyone buying the 10,000-cycle number at face value. Buy the warranty; ignore the cycles.
Why we rate them
The warranty is the category’s boldest, stated without asterisks we could find beyond keeping your receipt.
The US footprint is stated plainly — Seattle and Grand Forks, named on their own pages, which is more geography than most of this shelf publishes.
The niche focus is honest. A battery company that leads with ice fishing knows exactly who it serves.
When the battery is going through the ice at dawn and the warranty needs to outlast the boat loan, we reach for Dakota Lithium.
