Dakota Powerbox 10: what does the shell-only package include?
Short answer
The current Powerbox 10 listing is a shell-only package: you must supply a compatible battery and charger. It offers connections for small electronics in a portable case. It makes most sense if you want a configurable small DC power box and are prepared to check the complete system before buying.

What are you actually buying?
An empty case: Dakota’s current title and specification list identify the Powerbox 10 as the shell only, with battery and charger excluded. The page states, “This is the shell only. Battery is not included.” Its description paragraph still reads as though a battery comes with it, describing the Powerbox 10 as “built with Dakota Lithium’s legendary LiFePO4 cells” with “5,000+ recharge cycles,” and the instruction guide linked from the page says, “The negative wire to the battery is disconnected” — written for a box with a battery already inside. Use the explicit shell-only package description and confirm the order contents with Dakota if there is any doubt. Do not price it as a ready-to-use battery system.
What can you connect?
The listed connections include dual USB ports, a 12V car socket and binding posts, plus built-in LED lights and a voltage display. Dakota publishes no current rating for any of those outputs; the instruction guide’s only current figure is the replacement fuse, “an ATC / ATO 10 amp fuse.” The manufacturer describes a case built for its 12V 10Ah battery.

All entries are Dakota Lithium’s published listings, not AllEquipped measurements. The last rows are where Dakota’s two pages part company: the shell page claims more cycles than the battery it names, with no end-of-life threshold, and gives a low-temperature figure of -20°F where the battery page gives -20°C, which is -4°F. We are reporting the disagreement, not resolving it. Check battery fit, connector requirements and permitted current for your device before assembling a setup. A compatible socket alone does not establish that a load is suitable.
Is it waterproof?
No — despite “Waterproof” in the product title, Dakota’s own specifications say “Water resistant and built for wet environments. Not submersible.” The page adds that “Rubber caps must be replaced to ensure sockets are water resistant,” and it publishes no IP rating. Dakota’s warranty fine print says a product designed for rugged or marine use “does not mean they are waterproof, submersible, or covered for all forms of water exposure.” Keep those conditions in mind when planning storage in a boat or at camp. We have not independently tested the enclosure.
Who should shortlist it?
The Powerbox 10 is a format to investigate for small DC electronics when you prefer a separate, replaceable battery. Compare the complete cost of shell, battery, charger and needed cables with a packaged power station. For household AC appliances, start with our battery versus power-station guide; this connection list does not promise an AC outlet. Runtime depends on the battery you install and the connected load, so older customer reports cannot establish the runtime of the shell itself. Dakota’s own spec line credits the shell with “10 Amp Hours” that will “run a fish finder for 50+ hours,” without naming the fish finder or its draw.
