Dr. Yi Li founded Renogy in 2010 while a physics PhD student at Louisiana State University, selling solar gear from her Baton Rouge apartment through Amazon and eBay; by 2013 it was RNG Group Inc. in Southern California, and by 2015 it booked $18.9 million in revenue — the most recent figure the company itself has put a date on in public. Panels, Rover charge controllers, LiFePO4 batteries, inverters and DC-DC chargers: the whole first system, priced to be bought all at once.

The best founding story on this shelf is documented in the company’s own press release. In 2010, Dr. Yi Li — a physics PhD student at Louisiana State University — started Renogy from her Baton Rouge apartment, selling solar products through Amazon and eBay. By late 2012 there were four part-time employees and a small warehouse; she finished the PhD in May 2013, moved the company to Southern California as RNG Group Inc., and by 2015 it booked $18.9 million — numbers from Renogy’s own Inc. 5000 announcement, which ranked it 444th fastest-growing in the country in 2016. A later founder interview put revenue around $60 million a year.

What Renogy became is the default first system: the brand people buy when they decide to put solar on a van, an RV or a cabin roof and want every part from one place at the lowest workable price.

The catalog is the argument

One storefront covers the whole chain: rigid and flexible panels (including the ShadowFlux anti-shading line), Rover MPPT and Wanderer PWM charge controllers, LiFePO4 batteries with low-temperature protection, pure sine inverters, DC-DC chargers, and the ONE Core monitoring hub. Renogy’s stated mission is to “empower the energy independence of 50 million people” by 2030 — a target, not a metric, and we report it as such.

The honest comparison: a Renogy build is the budget path through exactly the system Victron Energy sells at two to three times the price. The difference isn’t whether the electrons flow; it’s documentation depth, monitoring maturity, and what happens in year eight.

Where they fall down

Corporate disclosure stopped where the marketing started. The most recent revenue figure Renogy itself dated is 2015’s; the $60 million figure is founder-stated and undated. For a company this size, that’s thin paper.

Manufacturing geography is unpublished. The company’s pages we opened name no factory locations. Where a figure or a fact isn’t published, we say so — and here, it isn’t.

Every wattage is Renogy’s listing. Panel output, controller ratings and battery cycle claims are manufacturer figures for named models, not third-party tests. That caveat is universal on this shelf; it matters more at the price floor, where margins for conservatism are thinnest.

DIY cuts both ways. A system sold to first-timers gets installed by first-timers. Fusing, wire gauge and grounding are on you — a solar installation is an electrical installation, and the Victron page says the same thing about gear costing triple.

Where Renogy fits

The first van, RV or cabin system. Complete, cheap, everywhere, with a large installed base to learn from.

Boondocking power — the weekend-RV market Renogy itself grew up serving.

Replacement parts on a budget. A dead controller on a trip is a solvable problem at Renogy prices.

Not for: installations where failure costs more than the parts — boats away from the dock, systems nobody will inspect twice a year. That is component-grade, documented-system territory.

Why we rate them

The origin story is verifiable. A graduate student building a national solar brand from an apartment is the kind of founding this site usually has to debunk; Renogy’s is in its own releases.

Price makes solar happen. Most first systems exist because the entry cost fell this low.

The catalog is genuinely complete. One order, one wiring diagram, one place to point the warranty claim.
