Nitecore is the reason a lot of people own an 18650 in the first place. The i-series Intellicharger became the default charger for anyone running lithium cells, and the lights followed. Today it makes the lightest headlamp worth taking backpacking — 47 grams including the headband — plus a real hazardous-location range and the power bank half the ultralight world carries. Read the model number carefully: many current lights have sealed batteries you cannot replace, which turns a dead cell into a dead light.
Most people meet Nitecore through a charger.
The company was founded in 2007 in Guangzhou by, in its own words, a group of flashlight enthusiasts and outdoor people. But the product that put it in serious kit bags was the i-series Intellicharger — a four-bay unit that would charge roughly thirty different cell chemistries and sizes, at a price that made owning lithium cells reasonable for the first time.
That was the wedge. The lights came after.
It is worth naming what we could not verify: no founder is named on Nitecore’s own site or anywhere we could find, and there is no published headcount or revenue. The brand is a marque of Sysmax Innovations, which also owns JETBeam. Ownership beyond that is undisclosed.
The NU25 MCT UL weighs 47 grams — bracket and headband included — and puts out 400 lumens.
For scale, Streamlight’s ProTac 2.0 headlamp is 297 grams. Coast’s XPH34R is 182. Nitecore’s is a third of the Coast and a sixth of the Streamlight.
That is not a marginal difference. It is the difference between a headlamp you notice all night and one you forget you are wearing, and it is why this is the default light on long trails.
An independent bench test measured 356 lumens against the 400 claimed, and 2 h 04 of high-mode runtime against 2 h 40 specified. That is a normal gap for the category and worth knowing, not a scandal.
Here is the single most important thing to check before buying Nitecore.
Many current models — the NU series, the EDC35 — use sealed, non-replaceable batteries. Lithium cells degrade. In three or four years the runtime halves, and because you cannot open it, the light becomes e-waste.
The HC65 UHE takes a replaceable 18650. So do most of the metal-bodied HC lights. If you want the light to outlive its first battery, buy one of those.
Related: the “i” series (P30i, P20iX) is locked to proprietary Nitecore cells. Standard 21700s will not work. That is the opposite of what the brand is otherwise good at.
Nitecore has publicly acknowledged counterfeiting, and the detail matters.
In 2015 the company issued an alert that UK Trading Standards had intercepted a shipment of counterfeit D4 chargers bearing the Nitecore mark. The fakes had a misspelled word on the packaging — and a partially insulated earth pin instead of solid brass, in violation of BS 1363.
That is a mains-powered device for charging lithium cells with a defective earth connection. It is a fire and shock hazard, not a disappointing beam pattern. Nitecore now ships verification stickers and runs a validation page.
The practical rule: buy chargers from an authorised dealer, never from a marketplace listing, and check the sticker. This applies more to Nitecore than to any other brand on this site precisely because the counterfeited product is the dangerous one.
Nitecore has a genuine hazardous-location range, and it is small:
Everything else in the catalog — the NU series, the HC series, the EDC lights — is uncertified. Taking a standard Nitecore into a Division 1 area is a violation, not a shortcut.
Worth one more note on standards. Nitecore’s manuals cite ANSI/PLATO FL 1-2019, which is correct and normal. Nitecore is not a PLATO member. Its Sysmax sibling JETBeam is, as are Coast, Petzl, Black Diamond, Streamlight, Ledlenser and SureFire.
Ultralight. NU25 UL and the NB10000. This is the brand’s strongest claim.
Batteries and charging. The i, SC, UMS and D series, plus 34 cell SKUs. The part of the business that quietly supports every other headlamp you own.
EDC and enthusiast flashlights. TIKI, TINI, EDC35, EDC37.
Specific hazloc jobs. HA23-Ex, EF1, EH1 — by model number, not by brand.
Not for: sustained high output. The EDC35’s turbo is 5,000 lumens; a reviewer measured high dropping to about 520 after ten minutes. Not for anyone who needs a light serviceable in five years unless they buy a replaceable-cell model. Not for anyone who wants a long warranty — 12 months on chargers and batteries, 3 months on IMR cells.
The charger business is genuinely important. Nitecore made lithium cells usable for ordinary people, and the i4 is still twenty-six dollars.
47 grams is 47 grams. Nobody else in this group is close.
They tell you what the Ex rating actually is. Publishing “Ex d” rather than letting people assume “intrinsically safe” is a small honesty that a lot of brands skip.
