Fenix

Shenzhen since 2001 — the best lumens per dollar in this group, and the clearest example of why lumens per dollar isn't the whole question.

Fenix builds more light for the money than anything else on this page, in its own Shenzhen factory, on standard swappable 18650 and 21700 cells you can buy anywhere. The HM65R is 2,200 lumens in a magnesium body for a hundred dollars. What you need to know before buying: Fenix's ATEX certification covers flashlights only — the headlamps it markets as "industrial" carry no intrinsic-safety rating at all — and the warranty depends entirely on which shop you bought from, including some that have Fenix in the name.

What we'd reach for

  • HM65R V2.0The signature headlamp. 2,200 lumens, magnesium body, IP68, 144 g with battery, 296 hours max, around a hundred dollars. Very hard to argue with on paper.
  • HM71RFenix calls this its industrial headlamp — 2,700 lumens, 400 hours, IP68. Rugged, well built, and carrying no intrinsic-safety certification whatsoever. Read that twice before specifying it.
  • WH23RFluorescent body, gesture activation so you can switch it with a wave when your hands are filthy. Also uncertified for hazardous atmospheres.
  • WF30REThis one IS certified — ATEX, IECEx, SGS and NEPSI, gas Zone 1 and 2, dust Zone 21 and 22. Explicitly excluded from underground mines. It is a flashlight, not a headlamp.
  • WF05E and WF11EAA-powered intrinsically safe flashlights; the WF05E is helmet-mountable.
  • PD35 V3.0The EDC and duty classic. 1,700 lumens turbo down to 5 lumens for 230 hours, on a standard 18650.
  • ARB battery lineFenix cells in standard 18650 and 21700 sizes — so third-party cells fit, though the warranty excludes damage from "unapproved batteries."

Fenixlight Limited was founded in 2001 in Shenzhen, and makes its products in a facility it owns there.

That is close to everything the company publishes about itself. No founder is named on its own site or in any trade press we could find. The only headcount figure anywhere is “over 400 employees” from a trade article in January 2018. Revenue is not published.

We would normally treat that opacity as a mark against a brand. In this case it matters less than usual, because what Fenix actually sells is legible on a spec sheet, and the spec sheet is very good.

What the money buys

The HM65R V2.0 is 2,200 lumens from a magnesium body, IP68, two meters of impact resistance, 144 grams with the battery and headband, up to 296 hours of runtime, on a standard 18650 cell. It costs about a hundred dollars.

For comparison, Ledlenser’s flagship headlamp is $299.95 MSRP. BioLite’s is $149.95. Fenix’s top current headlamp, the HM71R, is $119.95.

And the cells are standard sizes — 18650 and 21700. Not proprietary, not sealed in. When the battery dies in four years you buy another battery rather than another light. That is a bigger deal than any lumen figure, and it is where Fenix beats most of this group outright.

The sentence that matters most on this page

Fenix markets the HM71R as a “high-performance rechargeable industrial headlamp” and the WH23R as an “industrial headlamp” with a fluorescent safety-yellow body.

Neither carries any intrinsic-safety certification.

Fenix’s certified range — ATEX, IECEx, SGS, NEPSI, gas Zone 1 and 2, dust Zone 21 and 22 — is the WF series, and every product in it is a flashlight. The WF30RE is explicitly excluded from underground mines.

So: a rugged, bright, fluorescent-bodied light called an industrial headlamp, which cannot legally go into the hazardous area where you might reasonably assume it belongs. It is not deceptive — Fenix never claims the certification — but the naming does the work, and if the spec says Zone 1 and the job needs both hands, Ledlenser’s EXH8 or Princeton Tec’s Vizz II are the products that exist.

Fenix is also not marketed for rope access anywhere. Their own copy names industrial work, search and rescue, maintenance and caving. Not rope.

Where you bought it decides whether it’s under warranty

This is genuinely confusing and it is worth a paragraph.

Fenix Lighting USA is not a Fenixlight subsidiary. Its own footer reads “Fenix Lighting LLC, a division of Open Air Brands LLC,” out of Littleton, Colorado. It offers a lifetime warranty against defects — but only for lights bought from its own site or a retailer in its network.

It explicitly will not service products bought from Amazon, Fenix-Store.com, Overstock, Fenixtactical.com or Battery Junction.

Two of those have Fenix in the name.

Fenix also publishes its own page headed “Beware of Counterfeit Fenix Merchandise!”, naming Lightmalls, LEDsupermall, Foxbuying, Zapals, SINO Electric, FASTTECH and overseas eBay and Amazon sellers, and stating plainly that “Fenix and its U.S. partners will not be supporting the warranty of products sold through these retailers.”

Buy from an authorised US dealer, keep the receipt, and none of this touches you. Buy the cheapest listing and you own the risk.

On the lumen numbers

Fenix states that its specifications are tested to ANSI/PLATO FL 1-2019“produced by Fenix through its laboratory testing.”

That is normal for the industry and it is honest labeling. It is also self-testing, not third-party verification, and it is worth knowing that “tested to ANSI FL1” means the manufacturer ran the standard rather than an independent lab certifying the result. Nearly everyone in this category does the same. Very few say so as plainly.

Where Fenix fits

EDC and duty carry. PD35, PD36R, E35R — the category the brand grew up in.

High-output work at a real price. HM65R and HM71R, if the area isn’t classified.

Anyone on a standard cell ecosystem. 18650 and 21700, swappable, plus the ARB cell and charger line.

Certified flashlights for hazardous areas. The WF series, genuinely.

Not for: certified hands-free work in an explosive atmosphere. Underground mining. Rope access. Ultralight hiking at the top of the range — the LR80R is 1.6 kg. And not for anyone who wants a single warranty phone number.

Why we rate them

Magnesium and IP68 for a hundred dollars. The HM65R is a lot of engineering for the money and it is not a cheap-feeling object.

Standard cells, replaceable. In a category racing toward sealed batteries and planned obsolescence, Fenix still lets you swap an 18650.

They ship the certifications they actually hold. The WF series ATEX work is real and properly documented. The problem is the naming on the uncertified products, not the certified ones.

Where Fenix sits across the three disciplines: rope rescue, rope access, fall protection — three jobs, one pile of gear.
