What does a sleeping pad's R-value actually mean?

Short answer

R-value measures how well a pad resists heat conducted into the ground — higher means slower loss. Since 2020 the figure has come from one shared lab test, ASTM F3340, so numbers compare across the brands that use it. It is not a temperature rating, and it says nothing about comfort or durability.

Most spec-sheet numbers on this site turn out to be worse than they look. This one is the exception. R-value used to be a marketing figure — every brand ran its own test and wrote down its own answer, so two pads from two companies couldn’t be compared. Then the industry agreed on a single test method.

That makes the remaining problem a narrow one. The test exists, the large makers use it, and it is named on the page when they do. So a published R-value with no test behind it is no longer an oversight. It’s a decision somebody made.

What does a sleeping pad’s R-value actually measure?

R-value measures thermal resistance — how well the pad slows heat conducted out of you and into the ground underneath. Sea to Summit’s own definition is an R-Value measures how well a medium resists energy loss (heat transfer).

Higher is slower. That’s the whole of it. The ground is a large cold object in permanent contact with you, and the pad’s job is to conduct badly. The number is a ratio, not a temperature, and Sea to Summit is careful on the point that follows: a higher R-value mat “is not ‘hotter in summer’ – it simply provides better insulation between you and the ground.”

Why were R-values before 2020 not comparable between brands?

Because each manufacturer used its own test, and none of them were the same test. ASTM published F3340-18, Standard Test Method for Thermal Resistance of Camping Mattresses Using a Guarded Hot Plate Apparatus, and the industry moved onto it. Therm-a-Rest describes the standard as finalized and published in 2019 and says it keeps the ASTM-approved testing device at its Seattle headquarters. Sea to Summit says it was part of the working group that established the standard in 2020 and has always tested its mats in certified third-party labs.

The current revision is F3340-22, which supersedes the 2018 version. Both carry the same title and the same one-sentence scope: “the measurement of the thermal resistance of camping mattresses in conditions of steady-state heat transfer, using a two-plate apparatus.”

What does the ASTM test actually do to a pad?

It sandwiches the pad between a heated plate and a chilled one and measures how much energy the hot side burns to hold its temperature. Mountain Equipment describes the setup as a mat held under pressure between an upper hot plate, representing a person lying on it, and a cold plate underneath representing cold ground. NEMO puts the same thing more plainly: the test works by measuring how much energy it takes to keep the hot plate at body temperature. SectionHiker reports that the R-value is read at three locations on the pad, on three identical pads, and averaged.

The exact plate temperatures and the inflation pressure held during the test are inside the standard document, which ASTM sells. The public abstract does not publish them, and we are not going to guess at numbers we have not read.

What matters more is the shape of the thing: a flat plate on a flat pad at a fixed pressure in a steady state. It’s the same kind of controlled-conditions figure as a stove’s published boil time (see /guides/stove-boil-time/) — useful for ranking products against each other, not a forecast of your night.

What does an R-value not tell you?

Almost everything else about the pad. Mountain Equipment lists the omissions directly: the standard “doesn’t test how comfortable a mat is, how durable it will be, if it’s easy to inflate, nice to use, or pleasant to sleep on”, and it “doesn’t account for factors like compression of the mat or sleeping posture which may impact on warmth.”

It also isn’t a temperature rating, and the makers who used to publish those have mostly stopped. Sea to Summit’s position is that a temperature rating “is simply a manufacturer’s guess – it is not tested.” NEMO’s is that “R-Value is additive… Temperature ratings cannot accommodate this.” None of the pad pages we opened for this piece published a degrees figure alongside an R-value. Sea to Summit gets closest, saying an R-value of 4.1 “is suitable down to conditions where a hard frost might occur” — words, hedged, not a number.

Where degrees do reappear is in what a sleeping bag rating assumes about the pad underneath it, and there the published figures don’t agree. REI states that sleeping bag temperature ratings assume use with a pad that has an R-value of 4. Exped states that “ISO-rated sleeping bags are tested with 7R mats” and recommends at least 6.5. Both are published by the companies that wrote them. Neither shows its working, and they are not close.

Which makers say how their R-value was measured?

The big pad specialists name the standard on the page; several other brands publish a bare number. Same shelf, same figure, different amount of evidence behind it.

Weights and thicknesses are the manufacturer’s own, for the size named; sizes and units are quoted as each maker publishes them rather than converted.

Read the right-hand column first. Therm-a-Rest and Sea to Summit name the standard. Exped labels the spec “R-Value (ASTM)” on its international site, but its US page for the same mat prints 3.2 with no ASTM anywhere — which version of the claim you get depends on which page you open. Big Agnes says “third party rated” without saying rated against what. Mammut publishes “an R value of 3” with no test reference and no thickness figure at all. Stansport publishes 1.7 on one pad with no test reference, and on its self-inflating mat publishes no R-value at all — just a 1.5-inch bonded foam core and a 3 lb weight.

Not publishing a figure is a defensible position; nobody has to test. Publishing one without saying where it came from is the version worth noticing, because after 2020 there is a named, adopted method available to point at.

A related case sits one step off the shelf. SOL’s Escape Bivvy isn’t a sleeping pad, and it publishes a claim to reflect 70% of radiated body heat rather than an R-value — a percentage with no test method named. Reflective performance and measured thermal resistance are different claims, which matters because F3340’s scope explicitly includes air mats built with reflective materials.

Do R-values add when you stack two pads?

Manufacturers say they do, and they say it in their own words rather than in forum folklore. Therm-a-Rest: “If you stack two pads, you can add their R-values to achieve a higher overall R-value”, worked through as an XLite NXT at 4.5 plus a Z Lite SOL at 2.0 for 6.5. Sea to Summit: “R-Values are cumulative: stacking mats adds insulation… an R-Value 3 air mat on an R-Value 2 mat… produces an R-Value 5 sleeping surface.” NEMO: “R-Value is additive, which means that you can use two pads and add their R-Values together.”

Three makers, one answer. The caveat comes from outside them — SectionHiker adds that the values add “provided that there is no air gap between them”, a condition none of the three manufacturer statements includes.

Does construction type decide the number?

No — the standard treats all four constructions as one comparable population, and thickness alone doesn’t predict R-value. ASTM lists the covered types as “inflating air mattress with or without insulation, inflating air mattress with reflective materials, self-inflating open cell foam mattress with or without coring, closed cell non-inflatable foam mats.”

The table above shows why thickness is a bad proxy. Therm-a-Rest’s Z Lite SOL is 0.75 in of crosslinked polyethylene and rates 2. Stansport’s inflatable is more than three times thicker at 2.5 in and rates 1.7. Air on its own is a mediocre insulator once it can circulate; what raises the number is what’s stopping it — synthetic fill, reflective layers, foam. Weight moves independently again: the 7.3 R-value XTherm NXT is 15.5 oz, an ounce and a half heavier than the Z Lite SOL for more than three times the thermal resistance. Same trap as reading a backpack’s liter figure as though it described the pack (see /guides/pack-liters-meaning/) — one measured number, doing one job.

The short version

R-value is the resistance of a pad to heat conducted into the ground, and since ASTM F3340 arrived the number has been produced by one shared two-plate lab test rather than by whatever each brand felt like running. That makes it genuinely comparable across the makers who use it, which is rare enough on a spec sheet to be worth saying out loud. It is not a temperature rating, it says nothing about comfort, packed size or durability, and it is measured on a plate rather than under a person. Check whether the page names the test before you trust the figure — Therm-a-Rest and Sea to Summit do, Mammut and Stansport publish a number and leave it there.

Is a sleeping pad's R-value a temperature rating?
No. R-value is a lab measurement of thermal resistance — how slowly heat moves from a warm plate, through the pad, into a cold one — and it carries no degrees at all. Sea to Summit puts it bluntly: a temperature rating on a mat "is simply a manufacturer's guess – it is not tested." Two pads sharing an R-value can be entirely different things to sleep on.
Do the R-values of two stacked sleeping pads add together?
Manufacturers say yes, and several say it in print. Therm-a-Rest states that "if you stack two pads, you can add their R-values to achieve a higher overall R-value," and works an example: an XLite NXT at 4.5 under a Z Lite SOL at 2.0 gives 6.5. NEMO and Sea to Summit publish the same rule. SectionHiker adds a condition the makers leave out — no air gap between the two pads.
How is a sleeping pad's R-value measured?

The plate temperatures and inflation pressure sit inside the paid standard document; ASTM's public abstract does not list them.
Does ASTM F3340 cover foam pads as well as air mats?
Yes. ASTM lists the standard's coverage as "inflating air mattress with or without insulation, inflating air mattress with reflective materials, self-inflating open cell foam mattress with or without coring, closed cell non-inflatable foam mats." One method covers the whole shelf, which is why a folded foam mat and a winter air mat can be put on the same scale and compared without a footnote.
What pad R-value do sleeping bag temperature ratings assume?
Published sources disagree. REI states that "sleeping bag temperature ratings assume use with a pad that has an R-value of 4." Exped states that "ISO-rated sleeping bags are tested with 7R mats" and recommends a mat of at least 6.5 to get the rated warmth from a bag. Both figures are published by their authors, they are a long way apart, and neither shows the arithmetic behind it.
