Should you buy a serrated or plain edge knife?
Short answer
Buy a plain edge unless you regularly cut rope, webbing or straps. A plain edge push-cuts cleanly and is easy to sharpen. Serrations grab fibrous material — Spyderco and Kershaw both claim serrated edges stay sharp longer, and Kershaw concedes they take special tools to resharpen. No standards body publishes a serrated-versus-plain cutting benchmark; every performance claim is a manufacturer's.
In the display case the serration question looks like a style choice. It isn’t. It’s a bet on what you’ll cut for the next few years, and on how honest you’ll be about sharpening. The makers are unusually candid about the tradeoff — their own edge explainers, sharpening manuals and rescue-tool pages lay it out — as long as you keep track of who is claiming what.
So that’s the method here. Every performance claim on this page is attributed to the manufacturer who makes it, in their words, with a link to the page. Because, as we’ll get to, there is no independent scoreboard for this fight.
What is a plain edge better at?
Controlled cuts and cheap, fast maintenance — the two things the makers themselves put first. Kershaw calls the plain edge “the general-purpose cutting edge, the one most people need for daily tasks”, says it excels at “push cuts, slicing cuts, and precision work,” and — the part that matters in year three — calls it “easy to resharpen when needed.” Spyderco says the same in its edge-grinds guide: its PlainEdge is “easy to sharpen” and suited to “detailed cutting tasks where precision matters most.”
A plain edge is also the whole edge. Any flat stone restores it, and the angle you hold is the only real decision — that one has its own guide. Morakniv, whose outdoor knives are built around a plain Scandi grind — “a flat bevel all the way down and finished with a micro bevel” — recommends that geometry for all-round and bushcraft use, and it’s maintainable in the field with one stone.
What is a serrated edge better at?
Fibrous material — rope, webbing, straps — and every maker who builds serrations names that use first. Spyderco, which describes itself as the first manufacturer to feature serrated edges on folding knives, builds its SpyderEdge as “a repeating pattern of one large serration followed by two smaller ones.” The company says the pattern “increases the functional edge length by up to 24%” and “cuts fibrous materials with extreme speed and efficiency.” That 24% is Spyderco’s number for Spyderco’s pattern; nobody outside audits it. Spyderco also claims a SpyderEdge “retains its sharpness longer.”
CRKT got its pattern from Tom Veff, a designer out of the meat-cutting industry, and states the purpose plainly on product pages: Veff Serrations “provide superior cutting power of rope and straps”. The designer page goes further, calling them “the most efficient serrations patterns to date” — a superlative you should read as a maker describing its own patent.
Kershaw agrees on the medium: serrations earn their keep “when cutting fibrous materials like rope or webbing (think seatbelts)”, because “serrations dig in to cut through the tough stuff.” And it makes the same retention claim: “serrations stay sharper longer.”
Two makers claiming longer sharpness is still zero independent tests. Which brings us to the scoreboard problem.
Is there an independent standard that settles it?
No — the closest thing is a kitchen-knife test method, and it publishes no serrated-versus-plain results. ISO 8442-5:2004 specifies a sharpness and edge-retention test for knives produced for professional and domestic use in the preparation of food, run by cutting a pack of synthetic test medium under controlled parameters. CATRA, the UK cutlery-trade research body, sells an edge tester that “conforms fully to the International Cutting Test Standard BS EN ISO 8442-5 : 2004” and answers two questions — “How sharp is the blade?” and “How long will the sharpness last?” — by plotting a wear curve for each blade tested.
So a method exists. What doesn’t exist is a league table: no standards body publishes benchmark results comparing serrated against plain edges, for pocket knives or anything else. The ISO standard even sorts edges into types — Type A covers “cutting edges which can be resharpened by the user and edges with a pitch greater than 1mm” — but it sets test requirements; it doesn’t referee the argument. Until someone runs and publishes that comparison, “stays sharp longer” is a claim with two manufacturer signatures and no referee.
What do serrations cost you at the sharpening bench?
Special tools, more time, and a real way to wreck the edge — by the makers’ own instructions. Kershaw, in the same explainer that praises serrations, concedes that resharpening them takes more effort and special tools. Leatherman is blunter in its maintenance guidance: “Serrated blades require a sharpening system specifically designed to accommodate serrated edges in order to maintain the curvature of the serrations.” Then the warning that matters: “Sharpening the flat (back) side of the blade will cause the serrations to wear away, reducing the blade’s effectiveness.”
The published methods all involve shaped abrasives worked tooth by tooth. Spyderco’s Tri-Angle Sharpmaker instructions: “use the rounded edges of the stones and a slightly looser grip to allow the stone to flow into the recesses of each serration.” Gerber’s FAQ: “Lay the diamond shaft in the serration and file up and down in each serration along the entire blade.” CRKT sells a dedicated sharpener with 600-grit diamond rods for its own Veff pattern. None of this is impossible at home. None of it is thirty seconds on a flat stone, either.
Gerber’s FAQ adds the line that applies to both camps: “Dull blades are far more dangerous than sharp blades.”
Why do rescue knives use serrations and hooks?
Because the rescue cut is webbing, rope or a seatbelt — often under tension, always close to a person — and the makers design for exactly that. Benchmade’s 7 Safety Hook deletes the knife blade entirely: a hooked strap cutter “made for first responders” to “cut through seatbelts, cord, or webbing in seconds.” Its Triage 916SBK — “a tactical rescue knife built for confident response” — stacks the choices: a serrated edge, a blunt-tip blade in place of a point, and a separate safety hook besides.
Spyderco’s Rescue 3 is “a purpose designed rescue knife”: a VG-10 blade “serrated all the way to the tip” with “the safety of a sheepsfoot blade profile,” pitched at “both first responders and prepared civilians.” And Morakniv, mostly a plain-edge house, switches to teeth precisely where the material is known in advance — its serrated models are bread, rescue and rope knives, with “small, regular teeth that cut efficiently through fibrous or tough materials.”
That’s the cleanest read on the whole debate. When the manufacturer knows ahead of time that the material is fibrous, they specify serrations — and often delete the point while they’re at it.
What’s a combo edge, and does it solve the problem?
A combo edge splits one blade between the two patterns — and the two makers selling it hardest reach for the identical phrase. Spyderco says its CombinationEdge offers “the best of both worlds, combining precision and control with extreme cutting power”. Kershaw says partially serrated blades “combine the advantages of the plain edge with those of the serrated edge for the best of both worlds”. When two marketing departments converge on one phrase, the phrase is doing work.
The cost neither page dwells on is geometry. Each pattern gets only part of an already short edge, so long clean cuts run out of plain section and long rope cuts run out of teeth — and the toothed section still needs the serrated sharpening routine. As a hedge for one-knife carry that occasionally meets rope, it’s a reasonable bet. When either job is the main job, it’s the wrong one.
Worth noticing what Leatherman does instead on the Super Tool 300: not a combo blade but two blades, a 420HC knife and a separate 420HC serrated knife, listed side by side in the tool list. Leatherman publishes no rationale for the pairing. The design is the statement.
So which should you buy?
Plain, unless you can name the fibrous thing you cut regularly — then buy serrations, or a dedicated cutter, for that job.

If the fibrous job is daily — rigging, boat work, extrication — skip the compromise and buy the dedicated serrated or hooked tool; that’s what the rescue pages are telling you.
