Black Diamond Spot or Storm: which headlamp should you choose?

The most useful difference between these current Black Diamond headlamps is the power arrangement. Decide how you will recharge or replace batteries on the trip before comparing the brightness number.

These are the current Spot and Storm listings checked in September 2026. The Spot 400-R, Spot 400, Storm 450 and Storm 500-R have separate specifications. A discounted older model may still suit a trip, but its charging connector and battery arrangement should be checked independently.

When does the Spot make sense?

The Spot’s choice of AAA cells or an optional rechargeable battery is useful when you want to decide between carrying replacement cells and managing recharging. Budget for the rechargeable battery separately if that is the intended setup. Test the fit with any hat or hood you expect to wear.

PowerTap and multiple lighting modes are features to evaluate with your own hands. Consider whether you can find the intended setting without cycling through unwanted light around other campers. We have not tested the controls with gloves or measured beam quality.

When does the Storm make sense?

The current Storm suits a kit organized around USB-C charging. Black Diamond describes separate brightness and mode controls, plus red, green and blue options. Those extra controls may appeal if changing settings quickly matters more to you than carrying disposable spare cells.

The 100-lumen difference in listed maximum output is only one part of the choice. Beam distribution, the setting you actually use and how power is managed over the trip can matter more than the maximum.

What should be checked before leaving?

Charge or fit the correct batteries, learn the controls, and decide what backup light the trip requires. Check the exact model’s water-protection instructions and transport lockout. Neither a waterproof description nor a bright maximum tells you how long a useful setting will last.
