How should you choose a Black Diamond helmet and harness?
Short answer
Choose climbing protective equipment by intended activity, size, fit and the exact instructions. The Half Dome helmet and men’s Momentum harness are useful examples, but a matching brand does not establish correct fit or a complete safe climbing system. Check model-specific safety notices, especially when considering used equipment.
A helmet and harness are personal fit decisions. Product photographs can show construction, but they cannot tell you whether a particular size sits securely on your head or body.
What does the Half Dome offer?
Black Diamond lists an ABS shell and EPS impact foam, a fit dial and headlamp clips for the Half Dome. The clips are useful if a climbing day may extend into darkness, but the helmet must fit correctly before accessories are added.
Try the intended size and adjustment range according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Consider the clothing and headlamp you will use with it. Do not assume that tightening the dial makes a wrong shell size suitable or that a climbing helmet is certified for every other activity.
What does the pictured Momentum harness offer?
The photographed men’s Momentum has adjustable leg loops and four gear loops. The model is a starting point for all-around climbing, not a substitute for trying the correct size. Other Momentum versions and newer revisions must be checked against their own sizing and instructions.
A supervised fitting can help establish how the waist and leg adjustments work for your body and clothing. Gear-loop layout may affect convenience, but it does not decide whether the harness fits. Attachment points and equipment connections must follow the exact manual and trained use.
What should you take to a fitting?
Bring the likely clothing layers and explain the activity you plan to do. Ask to compare sizes rather than committing from a casual clothing-size label. Learn how the adjustments are checked, what the manufacturer identifies as load-bearing attachment points, and what inspection is required before use.

An unknown history is a material limitation when considering used protective equipment. Appearance alone cannot reconstruct past damage or exposure. Follow the manufacturer’s inspection and retirement instructions rather than treating a clean photo as evidence of remaining life.
