How should you choose a Black Diamond helmet and harness?
Short answer
Choose climbing protective equipment by intended activity, size, fit and the exact instructions. The Half Dome helmet and men’s Momentum harness are useful examples, but a matching brand does not establish correct fit or a complete safe climbing system. Check model-specific safety notices, especially when considering used equipment.
A helmet and harness are personal fit decisions. Product photographs can show construction, but they cannot tell you whether a particular size sits securely on your head or body.
What does the Half Dome offer?
The Half Dome is an ABS-shell, EPS-foam climbing helmet with a one-handed fit dial and headlamp clips, listed by Black Diamond as certified “CE/EN, UIAA”. Its instruction sheet names the standards behind that line, EN 12492:2012 and UIAA 106, and limits the helmets to “rock climbing, ice climbing and mountaineering use only.” The clips are useful if a climbing day may extend into darkness, but the helmet must fit correctly before accessories are added.
Try the intended size and adjustment range according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Consider the clothing and headlamp you will use with it. Do not assume that tightening the dial makes a wrong shell size suitable or that a climbing helmet is certified for every other activity.
What does the pictured Momentum harness offer?
The photographed men’s Momentum is an all-around harness with trakFIT adjustable leg loops, a pre-threaded Speed Adjust buckle and four gear loops. The model is a starting point for all-around climbing, not a substitute for trying the correct size. Other Momentum versions and newer revisions must be checked against their own sizing and instructions.
A supervised fitting can help establish how the waist and leg adjustments work for your body and clothing. Gear-loop layout may affect convenience, but it does not decide whether the harness fits. Attachment points and equipment connections must follow the exact manual and trained use.
How do the Half Dome and Momentum listings compare?
They match on warranty and maximum lifespan, but only the helmet’s product page lists a certification.

These are Black Diamond’s listings, not our measurements. The Momentum page carries no certification row at all. Its standard comes from the harness instruction sheet linked from the page, which states “This Harness conforms to EN 12277:2015+A1:2018” and “This Type C sit harness is intended to provide protection against falls while climbing or mountaineering.” That sheet covers harnesses in general, does not name the Momentum and does not mention UIAA. The helmet sheet, by contrast, lists the Half Dome by name and says the helmet “has been tested according to UIAA 106 and awarded the UIAA Safety Label.”
What should you take to a fitting?
Bring the likely clothing layers and explain the activity you plan to do. Ask to compare sizes rather than committing from a casual clothing-size label. Learn how the adjustments are checked, what the manufacturer identifies as load-bearing attachment points, and what inspection is required before use.
This article does not provide rigging instructions. Climbing equipment must be used within a complete, compatible system and with appropriate training. For industrial work at height, verify the separately applicable equipment and system requirements.
What should be checked on older equipment?
Identify the exact model, check its date of manufacture and consult Black Diamond’s recall register. The 2025 BD Vision harness recall concerns Vision harnesses, not the Momentum model pictured in this collection. Owners of affected Vision harnesses should stop using them and follow the official remedy. Black Diamond’s helmet and harness instructions both set a maximum lifespan of “10 years after the date of manufacture, even if unused and properly stored.”
An unknown history is a material limitation when considering used protective equipment. Appearance alone cannot reconstruct past damage or exposure. Follow the manufacturer’s inspection and retirement instructions rather than treating a clean photo as evidence of remaining life.
