A Maine invention run from Minneapolis under Swiss ownership since 2017 — the one device in the water aisle that strains nothing out and still claims viruses.
SteriPEN is the handheld ultraviolet purifier line built by Hydro-Photon of Ellsworth, Maine and owned by the Katadyn Group since 2017. It is the odd one out on a shelf of filters: nothing is strained, nothing is trapped, and the claim covers viruses as well as bacteria and protozoa — which no 0.2 micron filter can say. The catch is written on the product page in plain language, and it is the whole story of whether this device suits a given trip: it works on clear water only.
Almost everything in the water aisle is a strainer. Ceramic, hollow fiber, membrane — different pore sizes, same idea: push water through something fine enough that the organisms don’t fit. SteriPEN doesn’t strain anything. It is a lamp on a stick, and it works by putting enough ultraviolet energy into a known volume of water to leave the organisms in it unable to reproduce. Everything odd about the brand follows from that one difference.
The numbers are model-level. Katadyn’s page for the Steripen Ultra — article ULT-MP-EFG — states treatment of “½ or 1 liter” in “48 or 90 seconds” respectively, a product life of “8’000 activations”, an internal USB-rechargeable lithium-ion battery good for roughly 50 treatments per charge, and a weight of 140 grams. The effect claimed is that it “Eliminates bacteria, protozoa and viruses.” On the brand page, Katadyn puts it more briskly: Steripen models “destroy viruses, bacteria and protozoa - including Giardia and Cryptosporidium - in just 48 seconds.”
Viruses is the word to notice. A 0.2 micron filter cannot honestly claim them, which is why Katadyn’s own ceramic Pocket doesn’t. UV can, because it isn’t sorting by size.
SteriPEN was built by Hydro-Photon, Inc. On 20 July 2017 Katadyn announced it had “signed an agreement to acquire the assets of Hydro-Photon, Inc.”, with the deal “planned to close near the end of July 2017.” The same release said the brand’s “marketing and distribution operations will move to Katadyn’s North American headquarters in Minneapolis, Minnesota,” and that “SteriPEN will maintain a small technical office in Ellsworth, Maine.” Katadyn’s brand page now says simply that “Steripen has been part of the Katadyn Group since July 2017.”
That is the whole verifiable chain: a Maine company’s assets, a Swiss group’s ownership, a Minnesota commercial operation, and one technical office left where the thing was invented. What is not published is where any current model is manufactured — so this page does not call a modern SteriPEN a Maine product, and neither does Katadyn.
The limitation is printed on the product page rather than buried: “Use only on clear water, as cloudy, sediment-laden water hinders effectiveness.” UV has to reach the organism. Silt, tannin and glacial flour shade it. A filter handles murky water badly but usefully; UV handles murky water by not working properly, and the device cannot tell you that it didn’t.
The other half is power. A filter is a passive object; this is a rechargeable electronic instrument with a lamp that has a stated 8,000-activation life, carried into environments that are bad for both batteries and glass.
Clear water is a hard prerequisite, not a preference. Anywhere the source runs silty, UV needs a pre-filter in front of it, which means the “one small device” promise quietly becomes two objects.
Nothing is removed. Sediment, chemicals, heavy metals and taste all pass through untouched. This treats water; it does not clean it.
It is electronics in a wet place. Batteries, a lamp and a charging port are three failure modes a ceramic element does not have, and cold weather is unkind to all three.
The lamp’s activation count is a maximum, not a gauge. The device counts activations, not the liters you actually treated.
Origin went quiet after the acquisition. A brand with a real Maine invention story now publishes no manufacturing location at all.
Travel where the tap runs clear but untrusted. Hotel sinks, city water of unknown provenance, refill stations — the exact case the device is best at, and the case where viral risk is real.
As the second layer. Filter first for clarity and protozoa, UV second for the virus claim.
Not for: cloudy, glacial or heavily organic sources on their own, deep cold, or anyone who wants a treatment method with no battery in it.
It answers a question filters can’t. The virus claim is the reason to own one.
The limiting condition is stated up front. “Clear water only” on the product page is a manufacturer telling buyers when not to trust the product.
The specs are per-model and countable. Seconds, liters, activations, grams — figures that can be checked rather than adjectives.
