Lausanne and Baltimore — the public-health filter that became its own company in 2020, and still prints the sentence about what it doesn't remove.
LifeStraw began inside Vestergaard as a public-health device and, by the parent group's own timeline, became a separate company in 2020. The current line runs from the straw everyone recognizes to gravity systems, bottles and household filters — all of it built on membrane microfiltration with the same honest ceiling: bacteria and parasites, not chemicals, not heavy metals. The company names a test protocol on its product pages, which is more than most of the category does, and that wording deserves quoting exactly rather than paraphrasing upward.
The LifeStraw is the most recognized water product in the world and the least representative of what the company now sells. Worth starting with the current version of it, because the spec block is the argument. The Peak Series Straw page states a 0.2 micron pore size, a service life of “up to 1,000 gal | 4,000 L”, and removal of “99.999999% of bacteria, 99.999% of parasites” along with “99.999% of microplastics, silt, sand, and cloudiness.”
Then there is the sentence about standards, which needs quoting rather than summarizing. LifeStraw writes that the straw “Meets US EPA & NSF P231 drinking water standards for the removal of bacteria and parasites.” That is LifeStraw’s wording and LifeStraw’s claim. P231 is a test protocol; the company is asserting a result against it, and this page reproduces the assertion without adopting it. Note how narrow the sentence is on its own terms — bacteria and parasites, nothing else — and note that the same page says outright the straw “does not remove chlorine, chemicals, or heavy metals.” A company that prints its own ceiling in the spec table is doing something the rest of the aisle mostly avoids.
LifeStraw grew up inside Vestergaard, a Swiss group that built it as a public-health device long before it was outdoor kit. Vestergaard’s timeline records the separation in its own words: “LifeStraw becomes an independent company. Originally developed under the Vestergaard umbrella to provide protection from unsafe water, LifeStraw is now a separate company.” The timeline dates that to 2020 and names three companies in the group — Vestergaard, LifeStraw and Sceye. The same page records Vestergaard becoming a Certified B Corporation in 2021; it does not say whether that certificate covers the entity LifeStraw became, so neither does this page.
That history is also why there is no founding year in the header. The straw predates the split by more than a decade and the separate company postdates it. There is no single honest number, so the field stays empty.
Where the work happens is a different question again. LifeStraw lists offices in five countries — Baltimore, Lausanne, Nairobi, New Delhi and Hanoi. An office list is not a factory list. Nothing on that page names a country of manufacture for any model, and this page does not invent one.
The Peak straw is a filter. It claims bacteria and parasites and stops there, because a 0.2 micron membrane has no business claiming viruses — the same limit Katadyn states for its ceramic Pocket and Sawyer states for hollow fiber. GRAYL sits at the other end of that distinction, selling a press that claims virus removal and names the protocols behind it. Anyone choosing between these companies is really choosing between those two words, and the shape of the bottle is the least informative thing on the shelf.
The scope creep happens in the buyer’s head, and the copy doesn’t stop it. A straw sold into emergency-preparedness kits invites people to read “meets US EPA & NSF P231 … for the removal of bacteria and parasites” as “makes any water drinkable.” Chemical contamination and heavy metals are exactly the scenarios preparedness buyers imagine, and exactly what the product excludes.
No published country of manufacture. Five offices, no factory disclosure by model.
The corporate lineage takes work to follow. Legal notices still carry Vestergaard entity names and a Lausanne address while the consumer business runs out of Baltimore.
4,000 liters has no meter attached. It is an “up to” figure, and nothing on the straw counts down. Replacement is a judgment call dressed as a spec.
Travel and preparedness kits where the risk is biological. The claim set matches that job precisely.
Group and base-camp water. Gravity systems do volume work the straw never could.
Not for: chemical or heavy-metal contamination, or virus risk without a second layer of treatment.
The spec block states its own limits. The “does not remove” line is right there next to the removal percentages.
The standards language is specific enough to check. Naming a protocol is harder to hide behind than “lab tested.”
The parent published the split. A dated, public timeline entry beats a brand story every time.
