The company that carries his name is in Pembroke, Massachusetts, was bought in 1951 by Louis Sherman's Marine Compass Company, and is still owned by the Sherman family — Paul Sherman, the grandson, today. What it makes has barely changed and that is the point: a liquid-damped magnetic card on a jewel bearing needs no power, no firmware and no subscription, and it is the instrument still working when the helm goes dark. Every electronic navigation brand on this roster is an argument for owning one of these too.

Edward S. Ritchie began developing the first marine compass manufactured in the United States in 1850 — a scoped claim, and worth scoping, because this roster has older companies: Teufelberger has been spinning rope since 1790 and Grivel forging since 1818. Ritchie’s distinction is national and specific, not a superlative.
In 1951, Louis A. Sherman’s Marine Compass Company bought E.S. Ritchie & Sons and consolidated everything under the Ritchie name. Seventy-five years later the company is still privately held by the Shermans — Paul Sherman, Louis’s grandson, today — in Pembroke, Massachusetts.
That puts Ritchie in the roster’s best cluster: Beal’s grandsons running the rope works, Leupold in its fifth family generation, Tony Maglica still sole owner of Maglite seventy years on, Teufelberger eight generations in. Ritchie’s version has a wrinkle worth noticing — the name on the building and the family running it haven’t been the same since 1951, and the company says so plainly rather than blurring it.
A marine compass is a sealed liquid-filled card pivoting on a jewel bearing, and there is not much left to invent. Ritchie’s range runs from the Navigator on countless powerboat bulkheads to the binnacle-scale Globemaster, down through kayak and handheld models, and across into vehicle and off-road compasses for the overlanding audience — the same no-power argument, different surface.
Here is what the box won’t tell you. A magnetic compass is only as good as where you put it. Mount it near a speaker magnet, a phone cradle, an autopilot drive, a steel bulkhead or a DC cable run and it will be confidently, silently wrong. That error is called deviation, it is correctable — Ritchie sells compensators and maintains a service network of seventy-six authorized stations — and it is the single most common way people end up distrusting a perfectly good instrument.
Which is why the honest framing is not compass instead of chartplotter. It is: the chartplotter is the primary, the compass is what remains, and the compass is worthless if it was never swung properly. Silva and Suunto make the same argument on land, and Davis takes it further still with sextants.
Every boat with a helm. Bulkhead or bracket, sized to what you can read at a glance when it’s rough.

Not for: anyone expecting it to replace GPS — it gives heading, not position, and those are different problems. Not for a buyer unwilling to mount it properly, in which case you have bought an ornament.
