Furuno

Nishinomiya, Japan — a listed company that has been building marine electronics since 1938 and publishes its numbers to the digit, including the year it says it invented the fish finder.

Kiyotaka Furuno started a radio workshop in Nagasaki in 1938, and Furuno says that ten years later it commercialized the world's first practical fish finder. The company has been listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange for decades and publishes numbers most of this roster never will — ¥140.6 billion in consolidated sales, 3,411 employees, thirty-six consolidated subsidiaries. It is the commercial-vessel end of marine electronics, sold to fishing fleets and merchant bridges before it was ever sold to weekend boats, and that order of operations is the whole argument for it.

The roster’s marine shelf has been filling in from the outside: distress beacons at one end, radios in the middle, a chartplotter ecosystem at the other. Furuno is the one that comes at it from the working end. Founded in Nagasaki in 1938, incorporated in 1951, it built its business on fishing fleets and merchant bridges — and got to recreational boats afterward, which is the opposite of how most of this category grew up.

A company that publishes

Furuno is listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, and its company outline reads with the same bluntness Icom’s does: ¥140,616 million in consolidated sales, 3,411 consolidated employees, capital of ¥7,534 million, thirty-six consolidated subsidiaries — all dated to the end of February 2026.

We keep making this point because it keeps being rare. Most brands on this site publish nothing checkable at all, and we’ve had to write we could not verify on page after page. Two Japanese marine-electronics companies in a row just hand you the numbers.

The claim, as Furuno makes it

By its own account, Furuno commercialized the world’s first practical fish finder in 1948 — the story being that the founder and his brother worked out that fishermen could read schools of fish off an echo sounder.

We pass that along the way the company tells it, because the only source we have for it is the company. It’s a plausible and widely repeated story, and it may well be exactly right; it is also the kind of founding superlative that gets repeated for eighty years without anyone checking. What isn’t in doubt is what came after: sounders and CHIRP sonar, marine radar from small-boat domes to commercial arrays, NavNet multifunction displays, AIS, satellite compasses that give heading without a magnetic reference, and full IMO/SOLAS bridge systems for ships.

Recreational and commercial are not the same purchase

That last item is the sorting line, and it matters more here than on most pages. A recreational chartplotter and a type-approved commercial bridge system are different products under different rules, with different approvals and different service expectations. Furuno makes both. Read the specific model’s approvals — and, since Furuno’s global catalog is not the US dealer sheet, verify a model is actually available here before you fall for it. We said the same about Nikon and it’s the same trap.

Against Garmin, the choice is ecosystem versus instrument: Garmin sells you a connected helm where everything talks to everything and to your watch. Against Raymarine, it’s independence versus integration — Raymarine brings Teledyne’s thermal imaging into the same glass. Furuno’s pitch is narrower and older: this is what the fleet uses.

Where Furuno fits

Working boats. Commercial fishing, charter, delivery captains — the audience that measures electronics in seasons, not features.

Serious recreational helms. NavNet and CHIRP sounders for owners who want fleet-grade sonar without the fleet.

Radar buyers. The line where Furuno’s commercial heritage is most visible.

Not for: the buyer assembling one connected ecosystem across boat, car and wrist — that is Garmin’s sale and it isn’t close. Not for anyone who needs thermal integrated into the same display; that’s Raymarine.

Commercial-first engineering, sold to everyone. The recreational products inherit from the fleet products, and that direction of travel is the right one.
