Osaka, since 1954 — a public company that still builds every radio in Japan, and says so with a straight face because it's checkable.
Tokuzo Inoue started building radio equipment in Osaka in 1954, incorporated as Icom in 1964, and the company has done one thing since: radios — marine, amateur, aviation, land mobile, and lately satellite PTT. Two facts organize the page. Icom is a publicly traded Japanese corporation that publishes its numbers, and it states its production base is 100% in Japan, with the Wakayama plant making the group's radio products. In a catalog full of qualified origin language, that is an unusually blunt claim — and an unusually checkable one.
In 1954, Tokuzo Inoue started a small radio workshop in Osaka called Inoue Electric Seisakusho. Ten years later it incorporated as Icom. Seventy years on, the company does what it did on day one — build radios — at a scale that would be unrecognizable to the workshop and with a discipline that wouldn’t.
Icom states its production base is 100% in Japan, and its Wakayama plant says it manufactures the group’s radio communication products.
Sit that next to the rest of this site. Vortex says “designed, engineered, pre-inspected, and serviced.” Leupold scopes its US claim to specific product families. Suunto says HQ and factory in Finland but we won’t promise you a SKU. Icom just says: it’s made in Japan, all of it. A public company putting an unqualified sentence like that in print is making a promise auditors and competitors can check — which is exactly the kind of sentence this site exists to notice.
Two honest hedges still apply. Waterproofing is model-specific — one handheld’s IPX8 is not the line’s, so read the spec of the radio you’re buying, not the brand’s reputation. And the global catalog is not the US catalog; verify a model’s US availability before you fall for it. We said the same about Nikon, and it’s the same trap.
Icom is listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange, and its company outline reads like a bank statement: ¥36,959 million in sales for the year ended March 2026, 1,063 group employees at the end of it, paid-up capital of ¥7,081 million.
On a roster where most brands publish nothing, and where page after page we’ve had to write we could not verify, there’s something almost relaxing about a company you can simply look up.
The marine line is why Icom is on this page — the IC-M94D puts an AIS receiver inside a handheld VHF, which means a kayak or a dinghy can see commercial traffic the way a chartplotter does — but the company’s range is the quiet argument for its engineering. Aviation handhelds. Land-mobile fleets. The amateur-radio transceivers that made the name. And the IC-SAT100, push-to-talk over Iridium satellites for teams working beyond any tower — a subscription service, like all commercial satellite comms, and a different animal from a distress beacon.
Against Standard Horizon, the choice is close and honest: two Japanese radio-first companies, one with a famous waterproof warranty, one with the bluntest origin claim in the catalog and an AIS handheld nobody else quite matches. Against Garmin, it’s not the same purchase at all — Garmin sells you a connected helm; Icom sells you a radio that will outlive it.

Traffic awareness without a glass bridge. The M94D’s built-in AIS receive is the budget version of situational awareness that used to cost a console.
Working teams beyond coverage. IC-SAT100, where push-to-talk matters more than messaging.
Not for: anyone assembling a full electronics ecosystem — radar, charts, autopilot — which is Garmin’s sale. Not for distress alerting without a subscription; that is ACR, and a radio is the layer before it, not a replacement for it.
The origin claim is unqualified and checkable. “100% in Japan” from a listed company is a sentence with consequences attached.
Seventy years on one subject. Icom has never been a lifestyle brand. It builds transmitters and receivers and lets that be the whole story.
The numbers are public. After thirty-some pages of unverifiable revenue figures, a company outline with sales and headcount to the digit earns a mention on its own.
