Brunton

Riverton, Wyoming — the geologist's pocket transit, patented in 1894, and since 2021 owned again by two of the company's own employees rather than a Swedish group.

Almost everything written online about who owns Brunton is out of date. Fenix Outdoor divested the brand in November 2021 to two of its own employees — Lauren and David Heerschap, a geologist and an engineer — ending twenty-five years of foreign ownership that ran through Silva, Fiskars and Fenix. What they bought is a measuring instrument: the pocket transit D.W. Brunton patented in 1894, still built in Riverton, Wyoming, and still the tool a field geologist points at a rock face to read strike and dip.

If you look up who owns Brunton, the internet will tell you Silva, or Fiskars, or Fenix. All three answers are history.

On 11 November 2021, Fenix Outdoor announced it had divested Brunton to “two private persons, today employees of the company, Brunton Outdoor Inc.,” on the reasoning that Brunton’s customer base differed enough from the rest of the group that “the brand can be developed better in a different ownership environment.” Those two employees were Lauren and David Heerschapa geologist and an engineer, both former science educators, who describe the company now as female-owned, family-owned, geologist-owned and Wyoming-owned. Brunton’s own history page puts it more plainly: the Heerschaps “brought Brunton home after 25 years of foreign ownership.”

That is the correction worth leading with, because it changes what kind of company this is. A line inside a European outdoor group became a Wyoming manufacturer run by the person who uses the product.

What a pocket transit actually is

Most compasses answer one question: which way is north. A pocket transit answers a harder one: what is the attitude of that plane of rock — its strike and its dip — measured off an outcrop, in the field, with one hand.

The instrument came from D.W. Brunton, a Canadian mining engineer working in Aspen, Colorado, who was awarded the original pocket transit patent on 18 September 1894 and licensed it to a Denver watchmaker named William Ainsworth. Ainsworth & Sons built them into the twentieth century. In 1972 a group of Riverton businessmen bought the brand and moved production and management to Wyoming, where it has stayed through every owner since.

The current ComPro Transit shows what that continuity bought. Azimuth in 1° graduations with ±0.5° accuracy; an internal clinometer to the same figure; percent grade in 5% steps; a precision NdFeB disc magnet on a sapphire jewel bearing; induction damping to settle the needle. It is $474.95, and its own spec page says “Made in the USA in Riverton, Wyoming.”

Note the damping method, because it is the interesting difference on this shelf. Silva solved needle swing in 1933 by suspending it in liquid, which is why every baseplate compass you have ever used sloshes. Brunton settles the needle by induction instead — no fluid, no bubble, and no fluid to leak at altitude or in cold.

Where they fall down

“Made in the USA” is a product claim, not a catalog claim. It appears on the transit’s spec page and on the site’s banner. Country of origin for accessories, cases and the non-transit line is not published anywhere we could reach, and this page won’t extend Riverton to things it doesn’t cover.

The accuracy figures are the manufacturer’s. ±0.5° is Brunton’s published spec, not an independently certified test result, and no third-party standard is cited for it. That is normal for field instruments and it is still worth saying out loud.

Their own history page takes shortcuts. It compresses the ownership chain into a line about Fenix acquiring Fiskars in 2010, which is brand shorthand rather than a corporate description. The years are useful; the sentence isn’t a source.

The internet has not caught up. Retail listings, old reviews and reference pages still describe Brunton as a Silva or Fenix property. If you are checking who stands behind a warranty, check the date on what you’re reading.

Where Brunton fits

Field geology, mining and survey work. The transit is the point of the company, and it is a professional instrument at a professional price.

Anyone who wants a navigation tool with a service life measured in decades. A metal transit outlives the person carrying it, which is a different purchase from a $30 baseplate compass.

Not for: orienteering or trail running, where Silva and Suunto build the light, fast baseplate instruments. Not for a boat’s steering compass — that is Ritchie territory, and a fixed marine compass is a different device with different rules.

Why we rate them

The owners are the users. A geologist and an engineer own the company that makes the geologist’s instrument, and the transit they designed is in the catalog.

Riverton has survived four owners. Production stayed in Wyoming through Silva, Fiskars and Fenix, and is now owned there.

The instrument still answers the question it was patented for. A hundred and thirty-two years after that patent, strike and dip are still read the same way, by the same tool, made in the same town.

Ownership pages usually mark the moment a brand gets absorbed. This one marks the rarer direction of travel — and it is checkable on the seller’s own release, which is why it leads this page.
